USA (California) Road Trip Advice

Very true, but 2 cars to park, 2 cars to fuel, 2 cars to hire, 2 cars to drive.... I'm not totally sure we are 'up' for that hassle, but its something to consider.

Two cars to fuel is probably not going to be much, if any, more expensive than fuelling one RV. My experience of RVs is limited but my parents have owned a campervan and borrowed another (much larger one) and in both cases the fuel economy was pretty shocking but then again what do you expect when you're driving something with all the aerodynamic ability of a garden shed at 55mph or whatever.

You might want to look into the hire costs as well but it's perhaps not all that clearcut in terms of pricing, you'll save some money on the costs of hotels/motels with the RV but probably will find it to be somewhat more cramped and in some ways offer less freedom.

I've done some of the Pacific Coast Highway and while it's certainly possible to do it in an RV (or at least much of it) it would seem to be considerably less fun than doing it in a convertible. It's also worth bearing in mind the roads can be very steep, twisty and in quite poor condition.

Dates are a bit of a restriction as one of the party is a teacher, frustrating !

Based on that we are looking at late July + August as our availability for travel.

The only other option is over easter, but as I understand it, major roads will bec losed due to snow still being on the ground !

You are going to pay dearly for that sadly. As in almost £1k for flights instead of under £500.

Easter will stop you going over Tioga Pass.

Will it be £1k in Easter also? going over the Tioga Pass cuts off something like 200 miles doesn't it?

You'll get good deals in Easter. Yosemite park itself is open - but its snowy. The roads are cleared and it's pretty cool. But Tioga itself, which links Yosemite with the top of Death Valley, is closed.

hmm, ok.

I'll blast through a proposed route, itinerary and pricing and we can go from there.

Easter travel options are, at the very most, Fly from London on Saturday 23rd March late on, arriving back no later than Sunday 7th April.

Fox, hert are doing ford mustang for about 500 pound for a week. Is that about right or is there cheaper do u think?

I paid 400 quid for 2.5 weeks so no, thats a **** deal.

The tip is that the Mustang is usually found in the standard convertible section too, so book a convertible and you've a reasonable chance of getting a Mustang. It's loads cheaper than the specialist class you are looking at.

Edit - we are trying to look for flights for next year in July and August, but it appears none are available to check for prices which is a bit frustrating, are they only available 12 months in advance?

Damn teachers costing the rest of you a lot more money, Fox makes a good point :)

Yup, a **** deal, I'd take the risk with the cheaper convertible option.

That price and chance of getting a Stang isn't quite as simple as Fox makes out, from my experience things have changed since then.

I went over to Cali a month after Fox in 2010 and got the Sebring drop top (ok but pants compared to the Stang, especially as the Stang folding roof let's you get 2 large 15kg holdalls in the boot when down). I did a similar trip again in April 2011 and had a Stang, but it was a fight to get one. Booked the convertible Sebring/similar and was told then showed at the Hertz desk that the Stang is in a higher group and should be $90 a day extra . Some British charm and negotiating got that to $9 a day extra, well worth it! Unless i was just unlucky on my timing and hertz personnel then the easy way if getting a Stang seems to have been made less so these days!

Get 2 convertibles and do it properly, this may be the only time you do this trip, don't let the inner boring accountant take over. A convertible is vital for this route, especially through DV and along the PCH. Also go when Tioga pass is open, don't let the teachers and their leave dictate your timings, remember how lucky they are with all those months off ;)

Ciao x
