looking for a new card reader ,i have capabilties for usb 3.0 card reader i use a sdhc sandisk extreme 30mb/s should i get a Pretec P240 USB 3.0 card reader or try a new usb 2.0 or firwire type i already own a sandisk all in one but it does not support sdhc ,only sd also is thunderbolt going to be an option in the future.,

if youve got 30mbps cards then id recommend a lexar pro USB2 reader, i quite easily get up to 30mbps transfer to PC.

thunderbolt would be pointless, youll max out at 30mbps from your SD card.

what happens if i upgrade to a a extreme pro 45mb/s .although this would be costly do i need that kind of performance ?does my gh2 have limitations as to which it can write/transfer to the card ?what sort of speeds will the lexar be able to transfer to my pc

Depends if you need to transfer your cards in ultra-quick times. If you've filled half a dozen 8GB cards then it's advantage having a fast card reader (though I'd sooner use the pro grade firewire ones than anything based on USB personally).

But if you haven't got a camera which eats storage alive and are just downloading 8GB or so of photos after a week away then it's surely more sensible to make a cup of tea than spend on a fancy card reader? (I don't know how much they are, I know my firewire reader was £75 or something silly though when I bought it a year or two ago).

Basically, you know if you need something like that, if not I'd prioritise something reliable, fairly tough and portable over speed. On the other hand, if it's going to sit on your desk and it's a few £s more then why not.

well ive got a gh2 which has fairly large files in raw format and i normally shoot with added jpeg ,but its the video files that eat the most 25min to 30 min will fill 8gb , i either need a bigger card or some portable storage to boot ,dont like the idea of 75 quid for a firewire type ,card reader ,as i probably wont appreciate the benefits .i doubt ill fill the card with 8gb of photos in year but video most certainly .
