I have a laptop hard drive, and an external caddy for it. Is there any magic cable i can get from japan that'll allow to me to copy from my camera to the hard drive? I know you can get devices that are designed for this purpose, but i already have the drive - and don't want to spend much money on this.

I know you can't post names of competitors etc, but i'm having no luck in finding one because i dont know if they exist and if they do, what to search for to find one!

I'd recommend you take the card out of the camera, fit into a USB card reader..much much faster and won't flatten batteries.

There does exist a thing which can copy from camera to USB hard drive, but I think you have to have specific cameras, and possibly the HD to be Fat 32. So you can copy the data across in the field, without needing a laptop.

that is what i want to do though. atm, if i'm going to be away for a couple of days i take the laptop so i can copy the contents of my card onto it. But i want a quick and easy and lightweight way round this.

You can get driveless card reader/HDD combos if you look about.

What I recommend though is having a think about how often you would use such a device and how much it will cost, you might find you'd be better off simply buying more memory cards.

i'm concious of that fact, hence not wanting to spend a lot of money on one. Like i say, i already have the drive and the USB caddy - but i just can't find any 'magic' cables to do what i want :)

Would Belkin USB Anywhere not do that.

The USB Anywhere connects two mass-storage devices (media reader, digital camera, hard drive) using USB cables to transfer photos, songs, and files from one device to the other-all without a computer. Use the Belkin USB Anywhere to copy files from your digital camera to your external hard drive, between two MP3 players, and/or between USB flash-memory drives, external hard drives, CD-R burners, and memory-card readers. The compact USB Anywhere is ideal for traveling, as it eliminates the need to use your computer for photo storage. When your digital camera's media card gets full, you can use USB Anywhere to download the images to your portable hard drive and take more pictures.

I have 1 for sale here.

I use a Digimate II portable card reader/2.5" hdd caddy which you can buy the bare chassis for under £30 & fit your own hdd.
If you can omit the card reader bit a Thecus Yes nano N1050 is under £20.
