Finally got my build working but with one slight niggle.

Using this board i cant seem to get USB2.0 working.

Asus M2NPV-VM Micro ATX (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-145-AS)

I have installed all drivers off the mobo disk (although it wouldnt install the usb2.0 driver said it was already running SP1 or later) and its running on XP Pro SP2 so it should be using usb2.0 drivers.

But it isnt which is annoying coz this comp is for my gf and she uses her ipod a lot and therefore will need fast usb drives.

All help is very much apreciated.

Are the ports totally dead or do you get any kind of message like high speed device in a low speed hub typpe thing?

Yer i get one of those messages, i mean they work ok just at a speed so slow you wouldnt believe like 10 mins to do 500mb.

Yer im using ports from the mobo which is why i dont understand why its not working, ive never had this problem before.

There must be a reason for it.

Are you using the ports at the back or the front ones connected via case cables. Sometimes the cables give problems as they cannot handle the usb 2.0 speeds. It does sound like a setting in the bios though, like legacy support or something. Last suggestion is that the southbridge is fried. I had an ati rs380 or something like that and the southbridge was so hot you couldn't touch it. The usb would only work as usb 1.0 and had similar symtoms as yours. I rma the board and the relacement worked fine.
