Afternoon gents,

I've been looking around at getting a new motor today. I have mainly been looking at used focus zetec's and VW Polos.

Is there anything else worth looking at in this price range?

Just to give a bit of background info - I am 21, been driving 4 years, looking at engine size no bigger than 1.6 and don't want to be paying over 1k for insurance.

Cheers

Spending £7k on a 1.6 litre hatchback is a waste of money. If you want a hopelessly boring car then buy one for £4-5k instead.

Could you suggest some makes/models that you would consider suitable for a 21 year old in this price range?

Cheers

Why do you state "not over 1.6"? Because engine size isn't the be-all and end-all for keeping your insurance sub £1,000.

How many miles a year do you do? Do you like cars? What do you want from a car?

I wouldn't be doing over 10k a year. I'm not an utter petrol head, but want something reliable that will last me a good 5 years or so and (hopefully) not depreciate in value too much.

As for not wanting 1.6 plus, I was perhaps of the wrong opinion that going over 1.6 will increase my insurance, increase my petrol and increase my road tax quite significantly?

Cheers

Correct, that is the wrong opinion. A 1.8 or 2.0 will use a bit more fuel and possibly cost a bit more to tax. Significantly? Hardly. You're not taking about a massive step up to a 3.0 or anything, just not limiting yourself for no reason.

Also, suitable for a 21 year old isn't really a set of criteria - you need to elaborate more on what you want/need from a car. Given that the Polo and Focus are 2 different classes of car (Fiesta=Polo, Focus=Golf), we can't go on any assumption that you want a particular class.

Anyway, if residuals and reliability are a priority, I'd be looking at a civic

Great, thanks a lot for that - will have a look around at Civics.

As for the class of car, I don't think I am limiting myself at anything - I'm just looking for a decent buy within my price range that won't cost too much to maintain.

Cheers

A friend has a 1.8 Civic like that one, he purchased it new at 21 on finance but loves it. Quite a nice engine and he's pleased with the car.

Yeah looking very closely at the Civic now as insurance doesn't seem to be too bad.

On that note, I believe it is better off phoning around to get insurance quotes than using these comparison websites - is this correct?

Try both, I try all the comparison websites and then start phoning around for an hour or so.

The more people you try the better your chances of getting a good deal.

Carbase.biz is horrid.

that civic is horrid.

the town that Carbase.biz is in is horrid.

Agree with the first and last bits! As ususal though, it was only an example of what the money buys, not a hard and fast researched reccomendation - maybe I should start putting a disclaimer on posts like that.

What's wrong with that civic though?
