Then the cooling wouldn't be effective. One of the issue with AIB coolers in general is that they are good at brining the GPU temp down, but are pants at cooling the vrm (due to the cooler blowing the heat from the heatsink rather than cool air onto the vrm).

With a card like the 295x2, it is actually good to have watercooling solution for shifting the heat away from the GPUs, while the fan in the middle seat right over the vrm blowing cool air onto it (and cooling the rest of the PCB as well).

The 7990 was a great card and i enjoyed mine, but given the choice between 82-85c operating temps and 60-67c operating temps i know which one id prefer. The 295x2 would not be able to be kept cool enough with the 7990 cooler. Would like to know how much the AIO jacks the price up though.
 
Some peeps may prefer Ref coolers (also cheaper) so they can fit their own choice of aftermarket coolers.

Titan Z can run on air so not sure why that card cannot.

Think its a case of TitanZ big core, lots of die space, easier to dissipate heat. Hawaii is the opposite, smaller core, less die space, more powerful cooling required but just as powerful. In the case of the 295x2 and TitanZ, more powerful id imagine looking at the TitanZ specs.
 
You'll find that a single 780 running a custom BIOS will be on par with your 690 and 2 of them in SLI with custom BIOS's will demolish a 690.

You will also find an overvolted GTX 690 will demolish an overvolted Kingpin 780ti.

You have got to compare like for like.:D
 
Gotta say upgrade that CPU it's holding back the GPU usage on both cores of your 690 just like it does with both my 670's. go for a 2600k or 3770k and it will unleash more performance. That's exactly what I'm going to do for a fraction of the price of new GPU's.

From what I had read I got the impression the more expensive chips with Hyperthreading showed barely any performance boost in games, and they were only worth it for multimedia stuff. That's why I went with the 3570k.

If the 3770k would make a difference I might consider it, although it seems like the best thing to do is wait a bit longer as a lot of people have said. Hopefully NVIDIA will start selling a 790 or launch the 800 series for desktops.

It all depends on the game pal, but more and more games are multi threaded so it'll only benefit you, you won't lose any performance and can gain quite a considerable amount.
