Brothers got virgin broadband installed, after a bit of fighting we got it working with the PC, I talked to the engineer about getting it going through a router since he has a mac and xbox, he told me I could plug the modem into the router and use it like that.

I've pluged it into the router (D-Link DSL-G624T), the PC works like this, but the xbox doesn't, tried it with my laptop, it seems to see the connection but I can't view anything on the net. I've reset the router, because it had his old ADSL settings but other then that I'm absolutely clueless on what to do...

How did you get that router working with Virgin Broadband? I was under the impression you needed a dsl router with Virgin not ADSL. What cable are you using to connect the xbox to the router? (Straight or Crossover). You need straight.

The virgin cable connection will not work with the D-Link DSL-G624T.

You need to have the cable modem that virgin gave you connect to a normal router that does not have a built in ADSL modem.

In the case of D-Link kit something like the THIS or from Netgear have a wide range of stuff HERE will fit the bill very well.

also known in america as a DSL router

they will usually be labeld cable / DSL router and have an ethernet input instead of a phone input

you then output from the cable modem the router using a patch lead, then obviously connect all clients up to the router.

Can u recommend any?

Not sure if they still give them away, but ring up for your free WGR614V6 Netgear router. It does the job, works great I have had no problems with it plus it looks the part next to all my gear :).

How easy are those to set up, does the cable modem just plug in the back?

Switch everything off and connect the modem to the WAN port and the PC to a LAN port. Switch on the modem and let it sync. Switch on the router and let it pick up the modem. Switch on your PC and open internet explorer. You should have a connection. Make sure you are using straight not crossover ethernet cables.

It really is that simple, its just a case of connecting wires and the router will do pretty much do the rest.

It is as simple as plugging in and switchin on :) If you get any errors, get back to us with details like what IP address you get as that can tell you where thigns have gone wrong.
Quite a few of my friends on Virgin use the NetGear WGR614. I have an old 3com equivalent, but the NetGear does seem to be a bit more versatile as it has a DynDNS client and a few other bits and bobs that might come in handy.
