Using new tape for daily backup

My boss might not be in tomorrow so cannot run the usual tuesday backup tape. We have a load of blank HP 1.6TB tapes that are the same as the ones we currently use.

When using a brand new tape does it need to be formatted/setup for use or am I ok to just unwrap it and let the backup inventory at night like it usually does then run an hour later?

You might need to add the tape to a group. The backups where I work only backup to media set to the "Daily Backup" group.

We use a 20 day tape rotation. Will I have to make the media overwritable?
