So, my mam has just gotten a letter through the door off Vauxhall. Basically saying that her car has reached the age of 4 years old and needs a timing belt done. But when we bought the car they said the timing belt had just been done and it had already had the 40,000 mile service done by Vauxhall. So, we've just looked through the various service sheets and found the 40k miles service receipt and there isn't any timing belt on there. Where do we stand? Can we fight our case since we were told that the timing belt was done AND a 40,000mile service was carried out by them?

That's a good one..

Technically if you have it in writing or is provable to a reasonable doubt, then I would have thought it's worth pursuing heavily, hell it's always worth persuing even if not, but you can only take it so far..

What I'm thinking however is that if it was supposed to be replaced at 40K (I believe 90% of the ecotec engines have a 60K interval), it would be part of that service schedule, and if they had not of done it, that's easily proveable on your part.. however if it's a 60K/4yr interval, then I'm sure they may try and twist their own words to have meant it didn't need one at 40K and was therefore alright..

It's worth following up and seeing if you can get VX to pay for it, or part of it - but I would've checked the service book more thoroughly before purchasing.

It says 40,000 miles or 4 years what ever comes first. Im thinking, a timing belt wouldn't be on a service receipt would it? As its not a serviceable item. Im going to have a dig around and try and find the other paper work and see if theres any receipts.

If it's on the service schedule and it's claimed to have had a proper 'service' then they should be liable for that since it's proveable that it's had the stamp but no record of the cambelt..

Gather your facts, and did you buy it from a VX garage?

Are you sure this letter isn't just a mail shot??

I still get letters from my local Vauxhall dealership telling me my car needs x, y and z and I have never even had it serviced with them! It only went in for a repair!

P.S It should be on your service receipt, mine are usually broken down into parts and labour. You should have belt and rollers on there.

Yes we did get the car from Vauxhall. But the owner before us who had the car serviced at 40k, lived in Nottingham and by the looks of it, the car was serviced at a Vauxhall down there. This shouldnt make a difference though right?

Do you have the previous owners contact details? If so why not contact him/her and ask if the belt change was done?

I think on the receipt it does yes. Thats a good idea actually. Im gonna look for the service book and see if theres anything in there.

Just because it's serviced by them it might not have had the cambelt done

It's not a standard part of the service - when I booked my 1.4 Astra in for its 40k service a few years ago I was advised to replace the cambelt then as it needed doing but I didn't have to replace it. As it happens, I didn't (not enough money), still got the stamp and record and then replaced it the following month

If there's no receipt then get it done. If it snaps you're looking at a four figure bill to get the engine repaired

My vectra 1.8 ecotec is at 142K, don;t know when then belt was changed, although it was probably on time, as it's an ex fleet car. It's either got ~38K to go, or it's 22K over (unlikely?)

Unless it's a 40,000 mileer in which case it's 12K ago, or 18K still to go, reckon it's ok :) ?

We will do it. Just making sure it hasnt been done before. Ill be able to do it myself so the cost isnt the worry. Obviously though if the previous owner has already done it then whats the point?

How long ago was the 40k service done? A couple of years ago(or less), Vauxhall cut the timing belt intervals in half due to a high number of failures on certain models.

100k intervals became 50k, 80k became 40k and so on, so it may not have been done then for that reason.

Or as ajgoodfellow said, they may have opted not too get it done, especially if they knew they were selling the car and wanted to save some money.

Change the belt ASAP.

I doubt you'll get very far trying to fight your case you have one simple problem - Proving it.
