Vauxhall Vectra ST200

Firstly I can't really be bothered to talk about the ST200 Vectra as they made what, 200? Most of which kevin has crashed into a wall, so we'll deal with the GSi.

Ford responded to the Vectra GSi with the Mondeo ST200 a couple of months after the GSi was launched. I'm sorry, but there is no way you can call the Vectra GSi amazing yet the Mondeo ST200 'a bland mondeo of the day'.

Sure there were bland Mondeos in the range - there are bland variants in every cars range - the bread and better LX's and so forth, but then, these cars existed in even blander form in the Vectra range also.

ST24 > Vectra SRi
ST200 > Vectra GSi.

Vectra Fanboy > Mondeo Fanboy tbh

But I'm a Mondeo fanboy not becuase OMG ITS A FORD, not becuase LOL VAUXHALL SUCKS, not becuase HAHA MONDEO LOOKS SO MUCH LEETOR, but becuase I looked at the entire class with a view to buying the best car, and did so.

This is somewhat different to fanboyism displayed by, say, Gurdas, whose Vectra experience is his Mums 200k mile 1.8 LS.

Uh huh.

Just want to share a comment I've seen regarding the Vectra:

It is my strong recommendation that you do not buy a Vauxhall Vectra. The dealerships would deny they had a hole in their rectums were it not obvious they were talking from it.

That's from CarSurvey.org - and there are many more like that.

But you are a blinded Vectra fanboy who has never actually owned his own car, never bought his own car, never viewed cars with an aim of buying the best one and has a family who has worked for Vauxhall for years. The Vectra could come with a steaming turd as standard in the glovebox and you'd still love it. More or less every opinion you have on cars is based on looks - which is the same for most people with zero real experience. .

Fox your defenses are immature and inaccurate, grow up please. My opinion isn't based on looks and I hardly have zero experience as i've been driving for a good 2 or so years now.

[TW]Fox said:
No doubt you'll now come out with a list of Mondeos you've driven that belonged to mates who had any driver insurance policies, but thats hardly suprising ;)
.

A typical fox reply, you have no idea what I have and haven't driven and had experience of. We have had pretty much every medium sized family car made by vauxhall from the cavs all the way through to each model of Vectra, whilst the cav was better than the vectras (apart from the new ones), they were all very smooth and quiet compared to their relative mondeo rival.

I've no reason to be a fanboy and I love how you think you know everything about my life:p The satin red vectra was only one of many we had.

Brutal, but OK. Fox, could it not be argued that you are a Blinded Mondeo fanboy whose car did infact come with a steaming turd in the glovebox and you still bought it!? :p ;)

No, not really, as I didn't see the way of the Mondeo fanboy until after I decided it was the best car for me. Gurdas doesn't drive and doesn't own a car.

I became a Mondeo fanboy after I found it was the best place to sink my then life savings. Gurdas thinks Vectras look nice, and likes GM becuase they paid Dads wages :p

I don't own my own car but I do drive and have been driving since I passed my test. This isn't a few years ago when I was still only 16;)

Surely i'd despise GM for making both my parents redundant......

Having just sold my Vectra GSI :( I can say that they handle very well for a big car, yeah the standard Vectras handling leaves a bit to desire but the GSI always seemed good to me (ok I have never driven an Elise or anything to compare).

The Super Touring was nothing special (had a few visual mods but nothing much else), but the Super Touring 200 had AP brakes, LSD, suspension etc.

All this Vauxhall bashing ammuses me.

The Super Touring 200 was what happens when you throw a Vectra SRi at a Motorsport development company and say 'Hey, do yer worst, its a limited edition anyway'.

It was not a standard production series Vectra, was it?

I've just read this thread with some interest. The arguing won't get anywhere for one reason. Different people have different preferences.

I think that the general consensus between the motoring press and the majority of motorists is that the Mondeo is technically a much better car than the Vectra and I would tend to agree having driven both with a totally impartial view. When I was considering changing car about 6 months ago I was looking at Mondeos, Vectras, Passats, A4's etc. I had a totally impartial view and like Fox, I went out with the intention of choosing the best car for my money. The Mondeo turned out to be the best all round car for the budget and out of my choices I found the Vectra to be the worst by far. I was totally unbiased when I went to test drive these cars and my opinions are based entirely on my own experiences.

But, I can see why people think the Vectra is a better car than the Mondeo. We all have different preferences when it comes to cars and whilst I think the Vectra is an awful car compared to the competition for my needs, I can see how it can suit someone with different needs.

Technically speaking the Mondeo IS a better car than the Vectra, you can't deny that unless you haven't driven both impartialy but people don't always buy cars based on technical competency. Looks, brand image, customer service, brand loyalty and personal preference also have to be taken into consideration and this is where you can't really say one car is better than the other as all these things are subjective. :)

One thing I can't abide is blinded fanboyism.

WHOA THAT LOOKS COOL and then thats it, its forever the best car in the world - © Kids Everywhere With Skylines in Forum Sigs 1999-2006.

Fanboyism based on experience etc - cool. Drexel is an RX7 fanboy and will defend them to the death against Skylines. Thats fine, he is such a thing becuase he owns one and chose one after realising how good they are.

Just quoting cause its very valid and fell onto the last page :)

Agree with fox, same can be said for many ppl on this forum, fair enough they are fanboys and love the cars they have but its for the correct reason, cause its a very very good car!

me = BMW fan boy (never EVER thought I'd say that a few years ago)....then I owned one (in fact two).

Now i'm stuck with my TUPWTFBBQPWNALL CDT(aye) ZT

True, it was mainly in reponse to an earlier comment basically saying it was a crap Vectra.

And I would like to see someone who hasn't driven anything that special (i.e. M3, Evo, Type R etc etc) to say that the Vectra GSI is crap. It may not be the best but I don't see how people can say they are that bad a drive.

As I say, I owned a Mondeo, then a Vectra GSI (B) and now a Mondeo again, and tbh I would choose a mid range Mondeo over a Mid range Vectra anyday - but then I would have a Vectra GSI (B) over a Mondeo ST200 but i'd have a ST220 over the new Vectra GSI (the new GSI looks like a standard Vectra!)

One thing I will say about the Vectra is that the old GSi looks great. You know its no ordinary Vectra.

But the current GSi? Considering before they had to launch a VXR it was considered their attempt at beating the ST220 it just... looks like a Vectra..

Can't argue there, the biggest thing that swayed be to get a GSI rather than a ST200 was that the GSI just looked perfect, given unlimited money to mod one I would go nowhere near the looks. Was a sad day to see it go :(

The current GSI was all inhouse I believe, so basically it was a normal Vectra with a 3.2 engine and maybe the odd suspension tweak.

Just something esle to add to the fray:

My Mondeo had better steering 'feel' than my Scoob (when it was stock). True.

'Feel' is an area where the Phase 1 (or 1.5 like I had) classic is a bit lacking. It's bus-like steering wheel didn't help.

Yea but the new ones really are different to the old ones in the sense that the VXR is the performance model across the range and they make no attempt to come close in the rest of the range.

Not really what they are aimed at though. I would take a VXR over a ST220 purely on looks, VXR badge and engine. Hang the handling, you buy a hot hatch for that these days as there are a good few available. But the ST220 is far greater than the rest of the vectra range as I have tried and tested.

Remember being a passenger in a Supercharged VX ST200 with a nice set of Konis!

The things we 'ate' that day, and the noise....................OH THE NOISE

mmmmmmmmmmmmm
