Vertex 3's - To RAID or not to RAID?

Hi all,

I'm just in the process of my first new build in 4 years and haven't quite decided on the last and most important component: my first SSD.

I've been waiting for the next gen drives and the Vertex 3 looks perfect so I'm going to jump. I've been reading the reviews, and I've seen the blistering performance, and reviewers saying that it makes RAID redundant (see what I did there? :)), but I've only seen comparisons of a single Vertex3 to RAIDed prev gen drives.

So I'm wondering, naturally, what happens if I buy two 120gb Vertex 3's and run them in RAID0 on the Sandybridge Intel SATA6G controller, vs a single 240gb?

Seeing they aren't actually out until next week I realise that any answer is going to be speculation - what do you think?

u would loose TRIM and if one drive fails goodbye data.

Other than that I don't see no reason not to. It will be faster than a single 240gb drive and have the same capacity.

Me personally though if I had the money I would buy one single 240gb just because I don't want to loose TRIM support

I'm aware of the risk of data loss. I ran Velociraptors in RAID 0 for years. That's what backup is for :)

TRIM however - how much do the drives really slow down without this?

I'd give a single one a go first, just put on Win 7 and some applications and games etc and see how you find it. If you want another, just get RAID another. Not like it'll take long to install Windows again :p

For general usage I very much doubt if you will notice any improvement in performance by moving from a single Vertex 3 to a RAID0 setup using them...

Two vertex 3s in RAID 0 would be more than sata6 would be able to handle, and as far as e-peen goes, it would be very cool. Having said that, my experience with my vertex 2e has been fantastic, and I can only imagine that doubling the read/write speeds would be even better. Doubling that seems unnescessary. I reckon RAIDing two vertex 3s would be unnoticeable seeing as one by itself would be VERY quick, and the benefits of TRIM are long-term and not to be thrown away that lightly.

I think you're right. One 240gb it is. Looking at the stats I'm looking at a MASSIVE increase in performance from my single 300gb Raptor which has been doing me so well the last few years.

I think I was just starting to get greedy for more performance :D

What do you mean it would be too much for sata III to handle? It would be using two ports, so doubling the bandwidth available?
