Just plugged in my brand new Rev A03 Dell 2407WFP to find a great big smiling vertical line positioned 2/3rds across from bottom to 2/3rds up. Occurs on both DVI-D and VGA, connected to my PowerBook G4 with ATI Radeon Pro 9700 128MB RAM.

Tried resetting to factory defaults, unplugging, replugging, checking pins etc. Still nothing. As OcUK is shut at present and Dell only deal with you during the day with your product, I'm asking if you think this panel is bust out the box?

I'm also not entirely clear as to how to return broken goods to OcUK.

Cheers.

UPDATE: Just ran Pixel Check and yes, the vertical line fully shows on Green and White pixel test.

So I guess I'll be exchanging.

Ordered one of these tonight, do dell just pick it up and give you a new one for warranty stuff? and whats classed as exhangeable? dead pixels?

Did you buy it from OC.co.uk? And also isn't that quite a lowend gpu to be powering that monitor, I have 2 c BFG 7800 GT OC and on games it still has a little tussle with my comp at full res and everything on high.

I am not sure about that although I just bought one, I have no issues with my a03, but best ask SteveG as he has had 2 of these and I believe he may have sent one back.

I bought it from OcUK, so not sure who I'm dealing with yet. I'll find out when business opens in the morning.

It is a rather older GPU, but it can drive an Apple 23" 1920x1200 monitor, so I don't see why there should be any problems with this one.

I think the rough threshold for dead pixels is 20-30. But this is a constant vertical line that is always there. On a pixel test it only shows on Green and White. But it renders the monitor unusable.

I sincerely hope that an exchange is both swift and painless.

How do I contact SteveG?

From Apple's website re: my GPU

ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics processor with AGP 4X support and 64MB of DDR SDRAM video memory (15-inch model), 128MB of video memory (17-inch model)
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports up to 1280 x 854 pixels on the built-in display and up to 2048 x 1536 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors (15-inch model)(6)

If you call up OcUK, they will just tell you to contact dell as the warranty is with dell. I had a problem with my dell monitor day I received it and was told to contact dell by OcUK

I told dell the problem I had and they asked me about my warranty. I told them it was the next business day warranty service. So they arranged a swap out for my monitor. They delivered a monitor in box and took it out the box and swapped it with my faulty one. The person I spoke to with dell told me if I wasnt happy with the one I received I could change it again.

I think switch wasn't refering to your graphics card support the resolution, morely so that games will deffinatly not run smoothly at that resolution. I haven't play a game on my PC for ages!

Thanks for clarifying the Dell exchange, sounds good. Now I just need to be at home to do the swap.

Understood about the speed for gaming over resolution. However, I'm not intending to game with the Mac, I shall be building a Conroe system in the summer.

Thanks for all the help.

The easiest way to rule out the line being caused by your PowerBook G4 not being able to handle that high resolution (unlikely IMO) would be to use a much lower resolution and have the screen scale it up to fill the screen. If the dead line is still there then it's a faulty screen.

Just sounds like a faulty monitor to me though. Unlucky :(

You do have options when it comes to getting a replacement or refund. The contract is with OcUK so they are ultimately responsible. However if you are happy going through Dell and Dell insist they are sending you a brand new replacement (not a refurb, make sure you insist), then that's going to be your quickest and most painless option I think. If you go through OcUK it's all going to take much longer and be more effort for you.

Thanks for the responses. Shall be talking with Dell in the morning. Can't see a Dell Service Tag anywhere, just a barcode like number, nothing else. Or do the monitors not have the service tags?

That is a joke if that is correct. If i am right, the problem is with the company you bought it off and not dell.

In short its a quick way out of having to deal with you imo.

No service tags on screen afaik. Just computers

Yes teaboy, you might be right, but I'm really only interested in what will get me a replacement monitor quickly and with minimal fuss.

Thanks for confirming the service tag for computers only.

Ah, I have taken that long number below the barcode on the back left bottom of the panel. Hope that's enough to identify myself to the Dell bods.

Cheers.

So I called OcUK Support and was told to call Dell, as some of you indicated. Called Dell who were extremely apologetic and started the procedure for a replacement. Interestingly, it will take 7-10 working days to do so, even though they acknowledged a next business day warranty. They said that next business day only applied if they were sending a refurbishment panel. Odd innit.

More worryingly, they said that I was getting a new panel and not a refurb because it was within 28 days of purchase. I posed the question that if they send me another dud out of the box and this happens to go on past the 8 days, do I get a refurb? The guy said that that is at the managers discretion. I thought that sounded ominous.

The 28 day limit for a new replacement is common with monitors. I wouldn't worry though as it's highly likely you'll get a perfectly working screen you'll be happy with long before they attempt to provide a refurb as a replacement.
