I'm currently sprawled on the sofa, waiting for an 'attack' of vertigo to subside. I'm putting it down to bending in all sorts of positions whilst cleaning the cars this morning and it having some strange affect on my ears or something. I feel like I've had 8 pints, and am hoping I don't feel sick like I did the last (and only other) time I had this. It came on when I was driving home after picking up some oil for the car. Not bad, but I knew it would get worse. I think it's subsiding now though.

Has anyone else experienced vertigo? It's not very much fun is all I can glean from having it.

Yes I suffer from it. You can induce it in anybody. i refer you to what is called the caloric test.

Interesting. Needless to say I won't be trying that test!

I'm over the worst of it now, but got near to the point of throwing up. I hope I don't have another episode any time soon!

How often do you suffer from it ethan?

Regular, unfortunately. If your episode is a direct consequence of a build up of fluid in the ear then Beta histine would minimize your symptons within 15 mins to enable you to stand. You may still be groggy for a day or two. Prochloraperazine would help to prevent you throwing up within 30 mins if you don't throw up from the taste of it first.

Get some ginger, grate some up into a mug, pour over hot water and drink.

You could use ginger capsuals but, pfft, more expensive and slower to act. (tho eaiser to do if you cant stand! :P )

Edit: Tho' in that case you might as well just chew on the raw stuff.

I had my caloric test a few weeks ago, it was horrible.

I physically felt next to no vertigo in my left ear, and terrible vertigo in the right showing that my left ears balance us messed up, but my eyes reacted normally because the auditory nerve is healthy, the test doesn't pick up damaged / dead cochleas.

And I generally get frequent unpredictable vertigo attacks and have permanent balance loss / wobblyness, but the balance tests turned out to not be helphul.

The ENT specialists were actually against referring me for them and they told me several times that the balance tests wouldn't be of any help in my case, but I kept on asking for them and eventually got referred ... I'll never be asking for anymore of those caloric tests :(

What's strange is that I can hear sound from inside my mouth like whistling or humming clearly, but no sound from external sources goes through my left ear, and the hearing and balance is broken in both.

I'm on stemetil which works fantastically, but is only for taking in emergency vertigo attacks as it causes dependency and can be fatal if too much is taken or mixed with alcohol.

betahistine works really fast for me, but only lasts for about 60-90 mins then the vertigo comes back, while prochorperazine takes around 30 minutes to work, but shuts the vertgo off for around 4-6 hours. It can't be taken regularly though, the most I've needed is 3 in a week.

Betahistine was also aggravating my stomach pain / IBS, so I don't use it anymore.

I couldn't stand the taste of buccal phroclorperazine so changed to the slower acting tablet form, but it works eventually because I don't throw up.

Ever tried ginger for it Bhavy?

Edit: Off topic but I had IBS as a teen, was on something that made my wee and poo orange. Little did I know that, upon losing my virginity, it also turned my ***** orange too. Came as quite a shock... for both of us.

I have vertigo, its very unpleasant.

Ive been on betahistine for 5 months as an acute treatment....they forgot to follow it up and just kept giving me more until last week when they stopped it completely claiming it was time to see what happens without out it!

Strangely enough my IBS and stomach problems were far worse while on the Betahistine too.

Prochlorperazine (stemitil) is great and can be taken BD (twice a day) if needed and is very effective most of the time.

Betahistine causes gastrointestinal disturbance, its no good if you and digestive problems. However it also works as a weight loss pill and has been successfully trialed, but is not yet prescribed for that.

Stemetil can't be taken for more than 3 days in a row due to it causing dependacy and intolerance, though the doctors never told me how long im meant to wait if I have to take it for that many days. I rarely need to though.

I found that stemetil works during its full half life which is up to 6 hours, and a single one is plenty if I'm having any amount of dizzyness / vertigo.

The amazing thing about the prochloraperazine is the (awfullness of its) taste which is enough to make you vomit: Sad thing being you are not allowed to swallow and have to place it under your tongue or just under your lip against the gum for 30 mins lol

Go see your GP and ask for the normal swalowable form instead.

Buccal form - Buccastem
Swallow form - stemetil

The buccal form is only needed if your vertigo also causes vomiting. I was given it first and it did absolutely nothing other than melt into a horrible yellow goo of pure yuck.
