Ok, so what is very cheap to buy, very cheap to insure and runs on air??
looking to save a bit of money and get rid of my car for something a bit faster :p so would like to make a good few savings whilst I can :)

A practical classic - Tax exempt, easy to DIY maintain.

Triumph Herald?
Morris Minor?
MK2 Golf? (I know it's not a classic, but they run forever)

A Skoda Rapid. Cheap to buy, simple as hell, reliable provided the engine is in good fettle and cheaper than boots to run.

Also rear engined. Unfortunately, the similarity with Porsches ends here. :p

First person who says "Oh look, this is 25 years old therefore tax exempt" will be personally hunted down by myself and slapped :D

anybody remember that bit where clarkson got the car for £1

wonder if thats true, that dealerships have part ex cars they cant sell or get rid of and will take £1 for just so they dont have to scrap them

my old '96 polo must have been scrapped after i part ex'd it. Still a runner, but its never been taxed since :(

I looked into selling my car while I saved up for something faster, but tbh, going from my car to something dog slow and with naff handling would leave me very pee'd off and frustrated.

Why not do what I'm doing... hang onto your current car, don't spend anything on it apart from servicing and tax, and save up that way.

I'd look at a Micra, not the most exciting car but they go forever, don't rust too much and are pretty cheap. You could probably get a Mk2 for a couple of hundred quid.

Rover 420 SDi. Virtualy free to buy, engine is tough as boots and will deliver 45-50mpg if driven with some restraint. Quicker than you'd expect as well, though "quick" is obvioulsy a relative term!

Just takes longer

Seriously if I ran a car like a 1.0l Micra I could save an extra £100 a month on insurance alone, then fuel which at the mo I use £200 a month.. so I reckon I could get an extra £200 in my pocket a month you see.

scoob.

I'm just about to start a new job in london, going to live there for 6-9-12-18 months depending on how long it takes to do the initial work... after that i'll be moving to somewhere like reading/swindon and then commuting in on the train.

I intend to get something a bit giggleworthy eventually, however, the cheapest way you'll find to get around is going to be something you probably dont want, but you'll just have to bare it. Maybe something like a N/A Diesel 205 or something. Sure, its a total heap, but it will cost peanuts for insurance and fuel.

that I'm not bothered about

I've worked out what I could save now without having a poo-poo car, and then with the crap car... and well the extra £200+ a month wont be that much in comparison, but it'll help me get there a whole lot faster !

Have to remember that if your car costs you £200 to buy and £200 to insure then costs 75 instead of 200 a month to fuel, that saves you £125 and will take you nearly 4 months to offset the cost of buying it to run around in. Plus anything thats likely to go wrong with a banger, might not be as cheap as it sounds! :(

Edit, just realised you said you would save loads on insurance ooops... :o

yeah AT LEAST £100 a month on insurance lol
I might even just wait for my next renewal, as apparently a lot of places will insure me once I'm 19.. whereas currently they don't want to know.

a top gear story? it must be true then...not.

dealers have links with traders who take all their part ex's off their hands.
