Vet bills to have rat put down

One of our rats has developed a tumour which is now very big. She's very skinny and is in some discomfort so it's probably time she was put down :( How much would a vet charge to do this?

Are there are "humane" DIY methods? It sounds cruel but it would mean we could do it now rather than wait for a vet.

It's going to be a lonely time for our only remaining rat :(

Humane would be chloroform and then put some dry ice into a sealed box with it. Inhumane would be to hammer a 6" nail through it's skull!

what do you think they used to do before the leathal injection?

3 years ago our dog was very poorly and in a lot of pain on christmas eve. My father ended up shooting it as it was the fastest most humane way. It was a gun dog so knew what was going to happen.

Why pay a vet to kill the rat when you can do it yourself? It's not a large animal so it's a lot less complicated thaan if you had to do it to a cat/dog.

As suggested above, kill it humanely, quickly and cleanly.

i was asking the guy if he knew what they did before it...of course i bloody know :p

as it's a rat drowning would be the fastest way, probably quicker than the injection i image, and less painful

I know someone who euthanised a gammy hamster by grinding up a load of paracetamol and mixing it with Baileys. They then filled the water bottle with said mixture, and voila! Job done.

Not sure about the pain factor of this one though...

Gas it maybe? It'll just gently nod off and never wake up again...

Surely an overdose of painkillers will do the job? 5000mg of nurofen would send it on its way very quickly. I presume it would drop into a coma first and then its organs would shut down within a few minutes?

I'm guessing not. It probably takes a day for it to die and wild rats even get immune to it.

afaik it's not that they get immune to it, it's that they eat only a small ammount first to test if they become ill, if they do, then they avoid it, thats why the poison has to be tasteless, and oddourless in leathal quantities

Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Put it in an Aquarium and run a pipe from the car into the aquarium.

It will put it to sleep and then it will die a a few minutes later

Aye I was going to suggest something like that, though I guess a painkiller overdose would do the trick too. Not a nice thing to be thinking of on a sunday morning though :(

Do you regret posting this yet, Simmy? :p

I wouldn't put one of my rats down myself, I'd rather just pay the vet to do it and hope he doesn't rip you off for it.

Rat poison is not the way to go, is a slow painful death.
glass container with a cotton ball soaked with chloroform.

Its quick and humane

If your still at uni or school take it to your biology department and they will do it for you
