VGA to DVI monitor

I would like to connect a laptop with a VGA connector to a TFT monitor with a DVI connector. Is this possible without some form of signal conversion? I've tried a socket adaptor, but whilst it allows me to connect the two there does not appear to be any picture on the monitor.

sorry if this is a dumb suggestion, but did you go to the graphics card control panel to enable a 2nd display after you connected it?

It doesn't recognize that the display is attached when connected to the monitors DVI socket.
