What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)

Mass Effect theme!

..no Halo 3 theme!...maybe Final Fantasy X :o or Oblivion! MONKEY ISLAND!!!!!!!

Video Game Music Questionnaire:

What was the first video games console you ever used?
Megadrive 2. Played other things before then but that was my first console.

What do you remember about it?
That awesome bit at the start of the Sonic 3 menu when he falls from the sky. (i got it quite late in its life)

What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?

Yet again i was blown away by the menu music, while now i realize it was low quality, back then it was epic.

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
It added to the excitement i guess

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
I've always felt music is one of the most important parts of a game and clearly developers feel the same. We've gone from basic (but imaginative) jingles to epic orchestral soundtracks, a perfect example of this is Final Fantasy X where each character has their own music piece much like many great films (lord of the rings springs to mind).

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
Enhances emotions i guess, god knows the end of many games wouldn't have been so emotional without music.

What do you think the future holds for video games music?
I think we're nearing where it'll finish improving, we have bands creating music purely for games, orchestral soundtracks and mainstream music all finding their place within games. The only problem is not all games have this yet, i view that in the future all games will have music that impressive.

What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)

The highwind music in FFVII, the timing of its introduction and composition were just fantastic.

Video Game Music Questionnaire:

What was the first video games console you ever used?
Atari 2600 :o
What do you remember about it?
Thinking asteroids was amazing ( i was only 6 or 7)
What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?
I cant remember much when it comes to the audio from the console, most was memorable music was from the spectrum era with sabre wulf, ghostbusters ( the speech) and star glider being the most memorable.
Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
Not so much i was to busy playing the games!
What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
It doesnt seem to have evolved in the same way as gfx have, but sound is now far more important for me in game than when i first started gaming
How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
Some times its a good indicator of whats coming ahead, a game like MGS4 music work fanstically well with the game to build emotions and increase the whole experience
What do you think the future holds for video games music?
I cant see where it can go for now, high quality uncompressed/HD 7.1 audio is about as good as were going to get at present, i guess just the quality and amount of "noise" going on will improve. For example in BFBC and MGS4 it sounds like you are in a battle becasue of the sound
What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)The one that springs to mind is the last fight in MGS4 when it plays Snake eater, the song in mgs3 was awesome but how it worked into mgs4 at the end was truly amazing. Infact there was many musical moments in mgs4 that will always bring back memories.

Video Game Music Questionnaire:

What was the first video games console you ever used?
Xbox properly

What do you remember about it?
I remember it was the first console to drag me away from PC gaming for a while

What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?
Some amazing use of sound in games, Halo in particular had an incredible score.

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
Yeah it supported the visuals rather than detracting from them, which in my opinion many older games had.

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
Its become less about making a catchy tune and more about supporting the visuals and the gameplay

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
Done well it will immerse me in the game and support what Im seeing on the screen

What do you think the future holds for video games music?
More and more professional, bands are going to realise that they can reach a large audience through games. I would like to see more games get new music by artists or even scored by a particular artist.

What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)

As an overall soundtrack it has to be Deus Ex, no game score has perfectly fitted the game imo, I still listen to it on my computer.

Out of interest, whats this for?

What was the first video games console you ever used?
Sega Master System

What do you remember about it?
Sonic

What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?
Brainwashing, the Sonic theme is burnt into my brain.

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
No

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
A lot better now, although the COmmodore 64 could only do 8 bit music or something.

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
Used correctly it can help to set an atmosphere within a game

What do you think the future holds for video games music?
Cant see it progressing any further from a technical point of view, but it can be implmeneted very well now to set an atmosphere within a game.

What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)[/B]
Original Grand Theft Auto theme tune, still the best in my opinion for any game.

Please take time to fill this in, much appreciated...
No problem ;)

Video Game Music Questionnaire:

What was the first video games console you ever used?
C64 but the SNES was when I got into gaming so I'll use that one.

What do you remember about it?
My most potent memory? Dead arms from playing Mario Kart with my friends.

What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?
Nintendo have always had amazing in-house music, something a lot of game developers really need to take on board.

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
Made me panic when I was running out of time in Super Mario World. I also found myself humming the songs all the time.

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
I love how Nintendo have adapted similar theme tunes as they release each new game. It reminds me of my childhood when I play Mario Kart Wii and hear fully orchestrated renditions of the midi songs I heard on the SNES.

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
Far less than back in the SNES days as a lot of it seems too generic now (e.g. Halo, Resistance, GoW sound tracks).

What do you think the future holds for video games music?
I can't really see it progressing, except maybe the dynamic music from Super Mario World/Total Annihilation where the music mirrored the gameplay and adapted the song/pace to suite will be integrated into more games.

What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)
Super Smash Bros Melee intro theme, and pretty much all Zelda, Mario and Metroid sound tracks. I highly suggest you listen to them Neoni

Hope that helps.

Video Game Music Questionnaire:

What was the first video games console you ever used?
The first one I owned was a Sega Master System.

What do you remember about it?
I remember the crappy control pads and playing Sonic for the first time.

What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?
It was mostly very forgettable.

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
Less so than today. A few games like Wonder Boy III use music to add atmosphere to the game but it was mostly elevator music quality.

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
It's obviously come a long way. When games were smaller, you had one guy doing all of the programming and music. Nowadays you have a dedicated person for the music and sound - perhaps an entire team of people. It's a lot more professional and the bar has been raised significantly.

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
Good music adds to the atmosphere. It heightens emotions and creates a believable game world.

What do you think the future holds for video games music?
I think we'll see a lot more serious musicians and composers creating soundtracks for games. Video games in general will rightfully take their place alongside music and film in the entertainment world.

What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. When you step into your car at the beginning and you hear Billie Jean. It felt so modern - a game with real music. It made the whole game feel real despite the the PS2's limited graphical abilities. The chatter on the radio only enhanced the atmosphere and made Vice City feel like a living, breathing metropolis. After a ten hours playing the game, Vice City felt like home.

Video Game Music Questionnaire:

What was the first video games console you ever used?
N64

What do you remember about it?
Playing Goldeneye for the first time.

What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?
It was ****

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
No because it was so poor quality.

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
The original xbox inovated with its dolby digital dupport for all games, halo was the first game that had a movie qaulity soundtrack. i did'nt care about sound at all before halo or the original xbox, now i couldnt live without 5.1

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
If done right (like Halo or Kameo) then it makes it a lot more emotional.

What do you think the future holds for video games music?
I can't see how the actual music can get much better as we are already at movie quality, sound effects have a way to go though.

What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)
Absolute favorite is Halo theme, i have to mention Kameo though as that has an outstanding soundtrack.

No swearing

Video Game Music Questionnaire:

What was the first video games console you ever used?
Sega MegaDrive

What do you remember about it?
Blowing the dust out of the cartridge and console slot everytime i played even if i didn't need doing, and cutting the sides to make it accept Japanese cartridges.

What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?
Seemed a lot more upbeat/fun than todays.

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
Normally when a certain part of the level was meant to be more difficult, such as a boss, the music normally reflected this by getting faster or "more moody", other wise it was the same soundtrack throughout. I guess my mood changed accordingly.

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
It's the same principle as above today, except the music is technically advanced.

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
Same as Q4.

What do you think the future holds for video games music?
Nothing ground breaking that i can think of.

What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)
Sonic The Hedgehog - Title Music

Made me cry after the first 2 days.

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
Gone worse.

Not very much, 8-BIT FOR THE WIN!

Video Game Music Questionnaire:

What was the first video games console you ever used?
The Spectrum

What do you remember about it?
Games not working and stupidly long load times

What do you remember about the music/audio generated or played by the machine?
A lot of "beep, grr, bop and strange silences

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
It made me love games! I saw a very simple Captain America and thought, "wow". The colours also amazed me. Whatever they were it was bright and shouty.

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
I think they went well up to the Super Nintendo, I felt like the limited graphics forced companies to be inventive with music. After that Graphics seem to become a focus and games would look good but have crap music.

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
They're more in depth and feel more involving. Also, unless you buy an old arcade pack that old arcade feel has gone for me, even in the new games on Xbox live. I can't explain why though.

What do you think the future holds for video games music?
I think it'll turn into final fantasy musical scores more and more. Everyone seems to want to make and "epic" feeling game now.

What’s your favourite video game music score/piece (you can include a certain moment within a game)

My favourite music was from Donkey Kong Country when you fought K. Rool, I want to learn it on guitar. It rocks!

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
Not as much as it used to, the building of the music at Pegasus Bridge in CoD at the attack continued and escalated really gripped me, but in CoD4 I didn't notice it
What do you think the future holds for video games music?
More Orchestrated, film score-esque, better 3D spacial sound fx

Something from Zelda:Ocarina, Song of Storms, Game Shop Music, well every bit of music in the game really

I think game music peaked with the N64, it was all fantastic, Zelda, Banjo, Mario, all inspired.

Also did it have any impact on you in relation to the images on screen?
yes, as it got faster the more tense you became as you tried to stay alive

What is your opinion on the evolution of games music? (from when you first played a console until now.)
as the games have become more complicated so has the music with regards to sound effects, speech and full orchestra pieces

How does modern video games music impact you while playing?
same as it did on the 2600, if its good it will draw you in.
