(Video) The i5 is Dead...Long Live the i5?

Price, availability, performance, power consumption, day 1 drivers, heat output, AIB cards
There is probably a lot more.

Nodoby cares about power use. I think you can buy after market cards. Pricing is close enough considering the market and depending on the system and games performance is very competitive.

That is my point with AMD, its competitive sometimes.
Power use, no but with that high power use usually comes high heat output and with that comes noise.
Heat and noise are what people care about, especially when using a reference cooler that has been the only option for months, they sound like jet engines.

Never had one so can't comment but jet engines are pretty loud and from some of the YouTube people anything louder than a whisper is a jet engine.

But again if those are your list of priorities when looking for a graphics card and you by an Nvidia card as a result, then why do you care about CPU performance if the driver and card can't leverage it.

When was the last time we had cards that used a lot of power for the job they did that wasn't a reflection of an overall less than ideal design? GeForce FX series definitely embodied this and although Fermi had its redeeming qualities there is some truth there and same on AMD side. Sure your average consumer doesn't care if they do the job but as above one consideration then is overall heat output and resulting noise considerations.

As I've shown my 1700 was not able to get my 1070 to 100% usage in a fair few of my games.
The 8700k I have now, can. Even at stock.
A few reviewers have done sound tests measured in decibels that will give you an idea of how loud they are.

Erm the 780Ti? 980Ti. Not a peep from you lot about the power draw of those cards. And rightly so. Who cares.

Maybe you should think about that.

He’s critical where he finds the need to be. He’s perceived as being pro Amd and anti everyone else but that’s not always the case, he was anti Vega for example and called long before the hype train was full steam ahead.

I find his stuff refreshing and he usually presents his arguements in well thought out detail, even if he may not be right or I may not agree with it.

I prefer him than a lot the other guys who are essentially on the payroll with their sponsored or provided reviews.

I can see why people give him a hard time, but a lot of what he talks about puts pressure on Nvidia to do better.

I have, and its the reason the 1700 is sitting on my shelf :)
When volta comes the ryzen will also hold that back. I've jumped before it sinks.

Becuase Nvidia can't leverage the performance of the 1700 or becuase of the settings you couldn't run?

Yeah we know an over clocked quad core i7 and GTX1080ti will come top of a list of bar charts at 1920x1080 running DX11. If You're happy to pay the extra for 110FPS v 150FPS then fill your boots, but you need to keep in mind that the Nvidia driver is what's getting tested and not so much the performance of the CPU.

Whatever the reason, it wasn't good enough for me.
I don't care who's fault it is, what I do know is my GPU wasn't getting fed properly with ryzen. A lot of game benchmarks show this, too.
My money will go to whoever can provide me with the performance I want.

Neither of those two were particularly anomalous for power draw for the time they were in - 300-400 watt cards had become fairly normal by that point due to how long we were stuck on 28nm.

My 780Ti pulled as much if not more power than my 290X. When I finally got rid of the 780Ti the 290X was also a good margin faster.

Not a peep about power use from you guys about those cards. One of the reason I haven't bought Nvidia is because they don't have a 300 watt card.

Because it wasn't anything particularly notable within the context - my 780GHz heavily OC'd (pretty comparable with the 780ti) paired with 4820K (at the time at 4.4GHz) pulled an average of 370 watt at the wall in gaming and peaks of low to mid 400s in the most demanding games and that was whole system power draw at the wall.

While in context the Vega 64 unleashed will pull ~36+% and in some cases almost 50% more power IIRC compared to the nearest competing card - if you care about things like noise that potentially has some implications.

At this point I think you just like to argue, no matter what the subject.

Ok so no more spam about power use and heat from the focus group then. The 780Ti was as hot, loud and power hungry as anything. Pascal is 100watts too slow.
