(Video) The i5 is Dead...Long Live the i5?

Nope, I'm saying they cannot risk it. They need to ensure their CPUs will work on ALL AM4 boards.
It's not a silly point at all. If you are limited by motherboard power delivery they might aswell release a new socket.
With that in mind I'm saying 32cores on AM4 is very optimistic.

No they don't. Assuming by they you mean AMD.

Hang on, so AMD release an AM4 CPU and you are saying they do not need to ensure it works on all of their boards?
What planet are you on?

If you want to dream for a 32core AM4 CPU then go back to sleep, most people will be sceptical of this though.

In fact sod it, £200 says there will not be a 32core CPU on the current AM4 socket.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. Well apart from the assumption you're adding into the mix to make what you've said seem a little less daft.

Guys, stop willing waving, it's only clever glass used to play games, not really that important.

AM4 doesn't even have enough pins to accommodate a "32 core".
16 cores would also be very optimistic, but it might be possible.

More cores would or could come with 7nm Zen 2. More performance at a lower power draw.

Whether they decide to do that or not is yet to be seen but I'd imagine that is more of a market choice rather than a technical issue.

How many pins would a core need?

Difficult to say because AMD didn't publicly release that much info on AM4, they're very opaque in that regard. I'm mainly speculating, but 32 cores are most likely impossible on AM4, don't think 1331 pins/contacts is enough.

32 cores is very unlikely on AM4 I'd expect to see it on TR4 if anything.

Yeah, TR4/SP3 is their socket for many core MCMs or probably even many core monolithics if they decide to go that route later on.
If they want to bring 32 cores to mainstream they'll need an AM4+ or AM5. I'm really curious if they can actually bring 16 cores to AM4 or if they'll need an AM4+ thing, but time will tell.

They actually need to take some tips from Intel here when it comes to releasing documentation on their CPUs & Platform, their datasheets are very detailed (ex: 8th gen datasheet volume 1 and volume 2).

I don't think with Ryzen 2 AMD are going to go for more cores. It wouldn't make sense yet. The ecosystem needs to catch up a bit as it is only since Ryzens launch in March/April that more than 4/8 threads was in the hands of the average consumer.

Also need to keep TR4 and AM4 distinct.

I think with Ryzen 2 it will just be IPC and clock speed improvements.

Hmmm, I've just bought an old mobo and i7-2700K for £130 to use as a spare/second rig.
Am I clutching at straws hoping that it can still be a reasonable spare gaming rig?
I was hoping that with a decent OC the CPU could still keep up for a while now that games are actually making use of the i7?

My laptop has a 3610QM which basically performs like a desktop i7 2600K - still does fine CPU wise for gaming. Won't get the best out of like a 1080ti but for anything else it is still adequate - especially if you can get the OC up above 4GHz.
