Afternoon all,

was reading another thread on here about job satisfaction, and it got me to thinking...how long do people think its healthy to stay in a job?

I'v been in my current job at one of the banks in the City for around 5 months now, came here straight out of uni (ive just turned 23) and although Im enjoying my time here, and can see plenty of areas for progression, I cant help but wonder sometimes if I should have gone in for a grad scheme or similar to get a bit more exposure to different roles.

I guess its natural to think the grass is greener, but what do people think? Anyone chopped and changed a lot in their career?

I have chopped and changed a lot, i'm 25 and since uni i have been in 4 jobs - staying in each for a year or so. It has meant my salary has increased with each job change but it doesn't look all that great on the CV now. Still, the companies like my varied skill set so can't have it all ways!

I came straight out of College and into Childcare, spent a year there, then the next job 2 years and this one i've been in 1 year... but planning to stay for a fair few years yet :)

18 months should be the real minimum you look at for the first couple of years, it depends what the moves have been though, although too frequent moves wont look good, there is a good element if it shows you're progressing, only of interest to a company who will offer you good progression with them though

I've done about 19 different jobs in the last 10 years and never stayed more than a year in any of them up until my current one - which I'm coming up on 3 years on - the repetitiveness of it is driving me crazy but theres not a lot of work going around here atm and current job looks as safe as your gonna get in current economy.

If you don't mind me asking, what types of jobs have you had and why is it you move around so much?

All sorts warehouse, data entry/call center, database development, lab assistant, worked for a publisher for awhile, done some server hosting stuff, worked in R&D for MOD contractors which meant working closely with the army which was great but unfortunatly the work dried up...

Generally I just get so fedup of going through the routine, get up go to work, come home, go to bed, rinse, repeat, that its driving me crazy and I leave. Some of the work has only been 3 or 6 month contracts tho.

Depends on the job type, but for the first job I would say at least 12 months - perhaps 2 years. If you change every 2 months or something it is hardly going to make you look very stable to a perspective employer is it?

I've had 8 jobs in the past 7 years. The longest run lasting 3 years, the shortest lasting....2 days :D

The 2 day one was because I didn't realise what a shambles of a company it was. The 3 year one was a job I absolutely loved, it was close to home, great people, easy work - but I had to leave because the pay wasn't much. I miss that job :(

I reckon I'll be in my current IT job for the next couple of years at least though, it's not exactly exciting but the people are nice and it pays relatively well, so there's no reason to leave tbh.

I've had 3 jobs since leaving college (i did go to uni twice but both times ended up figuring it wasn't for me within a few weeks), one was for a company doing archival work, low pay but we had fun contract though so it ended after 8 months. After that I worked in a call centre for almost 5 years, pay also wasn't much, but the job was mega easy, I got away with murder and I never went without. The job I'm currently in I've been in for about 18 months, pays a lot better and I love the people there, however it looks like I may be fired soon (for a sandwich argunment) so I may be looking again.

:D

totally agree, wasnt suggesting that I wanted to leave my current job, was just wondering what other peoples experiences had been, how long they'd been in jobs, people who'd had lots of different experience etc :)

Im hoping to stick in this job and make at least a couple of years out of it, it just makes you wonder when you see friends who are on say a grad scheme getting to try out 3 or 4 different roles.

Depends on the opportunities within the company & your ambitions. If you stay doing the same job for a long time, you may find it harder to move up later against someone a similar age who has more experience etc.
