Can anyone point me to a reliable review of the Viewsonic VP2365wb, or give me some feedback as to how the Viewsonic compares to the NEC? I ask because the Viewsonic is in stock at Overclockers (and £44 cheaper), while the NEC is only available for pre-order.

The NEC has had very positive (and detailed) reviews at both TFT Central and in this month's Custom PC, both of which I consider to be reliable sources. The only reviews I can find of the Viewsonic are at CNET and at Dev Hardware. Now I don't rate CNET's reviews and I've never heard of Dev Hardware.

I'm puzzled because I understood that the Viewsonic and the NEC used the same LG panel (the LM230WF2), but the reviews seem to reach very different conclusions. The TFT Central review concludes "Overall the NEC fairs very well I think and comes out top in many of the comparisons with its popular rivals, the Dell U2410 and HP LP2475W". The Custom PC review also praises the quality of the NEC display, although it does concede that the HP LP2475W is even better. On the other hand, the Dev Hardware review seems to suggest that the Dell U2410 is in a completely different league to the Viewsonic, while the CNET review criticises the Viewsonic for its dull images.

Are the two monitors really that different, or is one pair of reviews mistaken?

The panel is only a small part of it, but even the same part number doesn't mean identical panels. The ones stated aren't the whole number. I.e LM240WU2 doesn't refer to a single panel at LG, the ones NEC use in the 2490 are still different from the ones in the Apple Cinema Display. It's mostly just a reference to a general 24" H-IPS that is then produced to the spec and cost of the customer.

Not familiar with Viewsonic since the CRT days, but NEC displays are usually very well built with fully adjustable stand, lots of OSD settings, very good scalers and usually better uniformity than the DELLs and HPs with the same panels. At least the professional grade ones usually end up as the benchmarks of their target market, so it's usually a safe choice.
