Vince's Ebay Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

It's a decent enough list but was much bigger a few weeks back :( I seem to be cracking through the more difficult repairs quite quickly though which wasn't something I was prepared for - I expected the vita port to take more than an hour or so! Seemed almost insurmountable going in but an hour later it was all done. I think my soldering skills are improving all the time! :D

your doing great, some of the small repairs on traces i have done i have suprised myself, not to the level of your vita tho, thats ace work!

now to decide on either Hakko 888 or the 951, least with 951 each time u change tip u change the heater element, makes more expensive tho! , 951 you can also get a micro soldering pencil for traces etc :)

Im using a £10 iron... I should really upgrade given how much im doing lol

Ill take some better pics of the vita repair when I am doing the clean up on it :D and hopefully give an idea of the scale we are working on :D looks massive in my pics but can assure you its properly tiny!

do it , the amount you are fixing it would pay for itself! , im wondering what a top end iron would be like, being using an Aoyue 968+ for about 15 years, hot air section is good and iron has always seemed ok, a lot of people always say they are super supprised when they get a top one of how different it actually is

yea I can 100% agree some tips ive used are just junk, my iron is junk and i use it 100% of the time at full power, my old amtek 16w was actually a better iron for most things.

the 888 is very recommended, pitty the heating element is part of the wand though. Only thing i really dont like is no up and down for temp, its 1 button and u have to faff about, I know that would annoy me :)

I shall look into it... I have fully tested the vita and its golden... working like a champ! problem is I can't play the only game I have on it as I dont have the memory card  This is what happens when you pay £35 for somebody elses junk. Vita ports are expensive too you know expensive enough that I only bought the one and trusted myself not to screw it up, the port was £6.85 from china to put that into perspective I pay around 70p for a switch charge port. So far the vita owes me £41, when all the toys get here it will look amazing but we do have to add another £28 so in the end ill have a immaculate Vita for £69 with a spare screen and chassis on standby for some mods. I think thats probably low end Vita money so thats a good result on this one. Oh and this battery is now absolutely fine but we do need to add another £6.90 for the new battery I bought so £76.

not bad at all , my fully fixed up one cost me 100 in total with a few bits. Wack a few apps on there and a vita2sd and all good :)

decided on a hakko 951 btw , expensive but will last many years to come and down the line u can get a micro solder wand for it . All the reviews are very good too

p.s was that enamel wire you used on the port?

It was but the runs are all less than 1cm. This is the stuff I used:

I have some of these but man they are also super fiddly and like to come away from the board.. once its damage like this there is no way its going to look clean again :)

just took a look at the port on my vita for a realtime view, thats some fine soldering there fella! some of them points are tiny, great job :)

I was planning to do some more today but Microsoft decided to release an update overnight to the Insider DEV track for win 11 that literally nuked my machine... Lovely green screens of death! So instead ive had to reinstall my OS which to be fair is decent because I wanted out of the 11 dev track anyway but it means the day has been spent messing about with the software on my PC rather than working or doing anything remotely interesting. God damn microsoft!

Well that outright sucks!, Microsoft at its best! . No updates from me either, With no soldering iron im out. I have a 951 on order, but managed to find a heater element / wand for my old machine too, that will be with me tomorrow or thurs :)

I worked on my GG board last night, took off the electrolytic caps I had put on cleaned the board up like crazy, checked a ton of traces and tonight ill recap it again mlcc I think. I also got a bunch of caps out for the Lynx to make up a kit for it but again missing a few that are required so they are on order. All I seem to do is order and wait for parts.

I didn’t have any ceramics , so have ordered the retro six set

godamn it ! I could do with ordering some multipacks , I’ve got metal smd and normal caps just no ceramics

I tend not to order the multi packs but I worked out what they were in the kit and just went big because 8.99 for one kit or 20 kits from china for the same money. Is also why I put an order in a few weeks back for 5 mcwill screens just because I would like a little bit of stock if I do get another I won't need to go ordering all the parts again.

Just so happens you can wire the mcwill into the lynx as well so thats useful.

ooohhh do I sense a nice lynx upgrade on the horizon :)

Depends how well it works.. if the stock screen works then I could leave that. Ropey ones with long screw damage are going for like £200 with a mcwill so it's probably worth the upgrade. If the stock screen works it's probably a £200 lynx anyway.
