Virgin 50Mb Installation - what do they do?

Exactly. You wouldn't buy a brand new car that drives off the forecourt in limp mode.

I can't have the ps3 on streaming a movie, while browsing the net and my flatmate using his xbox. It just grinds.

I've managed to get a much better wifi rate of around 60% but that just reduces my overal speed by so much. I wish I could run a lan cable from router to my pc but that's just impractical.

why do people still use wifi for anything that isn't a mobile device.

get yourself some powerline network plugs.

Yep it's a separate router/modem.

well my internet has got better, it's faster than it has been after spending a lot of time finding the best of the wifi channels. Still not ideal at around 65 - 75% coverage despite it being in the next room.

What happens now though, which is really annoying, I am having to reboot the router every morning and evening. I wake up in the morning and try and access a webpage and it just shows page cannot be displayed, Wifi connection is fine but no actual access to internet pages. Same when I come home from work in the evening, try to access and the page is down.

Going to have to speak to Virgin about this now, it's just not good enough.

I'm really worried with all these stories - I currently have a totally reliable, fast 20MB connection with a wireless network that I've probably only re-booted once in the last year. I've been thinking about a 50Mb upgrade for the last couple of months, but I'd hate to trade the superb 20Mb service and wireless network that I have now, for an unreliable 50Mb one with a poor router and wireless network

getting mine on the 30th! really hope its an improvement on our current o2 setup!

When I spoke to the sales person when ordering the XXL package online they said I dont need to cancel my current phone line with BT and my current o2 broadband. Will they definitely take care of the change over?

They need to pull their finger out and upgrade my area for the new upload  Keep seeing these 50/5 while my area still 50/1.6 or at least hurry and bring 100 :o

I suppose if they're taking your landline number over they'd be able to send the cease to BT etc, but I'm almost certain they're not able to cancel your broadband for you.

To be honest with you mate you should route that through a switch with a wireless acces point on it. I dont rely on a router for anythign other than giving my switch the internet access. Im currently running a 24 port netgear switch with a cisco wireless acces point attached. The only thing my router deals with is routing the internet traffic to the switch, the switch then does the rest, and does a dam good job at it as well.

Having read this thread I gave them a ring as I was out of contract with VM. I managed to convince them to give me the half price deal, free installation and activation despite the small print arguing the contrary ;)

Customer services/Retentions were convinced that they were now giving out the Hub with 50Mb connections though, which is different to what is on their website and what I'm reading above.

Has anyone who has just got 50MB been given anything other than a separate modem and router?
