Virgin Media broadband experiences?

Well Virgin finally came around today and now I have broadband and phone through them. Took me a while to get the wireless to work properly, changing it from Automatic channel to Channel 6 seemed to do the trick though.

The problem I now have is that the router now resides in the living room, directly behind the TV, which itself sits in the corner of the room, at a 45' angle on top of a cabinet. It seems that when the TV is off the wireless is nice and quick, but when the TV is on it wrecks it. I guess it doesn't like being sat directly behind the LCD TV??

The cable that runs from the cable port in the wall to the router is only about 1m long (nice and generous of the install guy!) so at the moment I can't really position it in many other places. What type of cable do I need to buy if I want a longer one? Its the type with threads on each end?

Cheers

Which router is it?, When I upgraded to 50mb a couple of months ago they gave me a small crappy D-Link which was shockingly poor, I just phoned them and they sent me a netgear which has been superb so far.

I download at 50mb on the button when downloading from usenet it's absolutely crazy, Does anyone know if we're getting a speed upgrade over the next year or possibliy cheaper packages?.

I noticed that the 100mb service which Virgin are rolling out soon is the same price as 50mb currently is so maybe we've got something to look forward too!!!! (wishful thinking).

Are you still getting the 50mb on Usenet. They are now managing all Usenet traffic. 5pm to 12am weekdays and 12pm to 12am weekend.

Bye bye unlimited.

Since they put in the new upload speeds and traffic management my connection has gone really slow in the evenings. I can get 1.1mb in the mornings but only 150kb in the evenings!

They say my area is overloaded but my suspicion is the traffic shaping and management systems is going bonkers. I'm not downloading any P2P or newsgroups stuff BTW.

Ugh... I've not had my pc since last wednesday and I've just read the other threads about the traffic monitoring which sucks, Looks like it's not all sunshine and rainbows afterall I never heard about the usenet traffic shaping :( , I use usenetserver and newsleecher through port 553 usually hopefully that gets around it?. I used it last tuesday and it was awesome.

If steam is traffic shaped bye bye 50mb pointless having it :(

on the most part, as long as you don't have issues its good. if you need to phone tech support - good luck. schedule downloads overnight and you can use it during the day without lag etc from shaping
