Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Yeah I'm not really liking the new TiVo box, I wonder if anyone can help me with a minor problem?

I have my TV connected to my Hi-fi amp which has my DVD player connected to it and the TV. in this configuration I was able to control the set top box volume with sound outputted through the hi-fi speakers with the TV speakers turned to zero. With the Tivo box the set top remote now controls the TV volume, which force me to use the Hi-fi remote to adjust the volume. How do I get the set top remote to adjust the volume on the Hi-fi again without it doing it on the TV.

Does that make sense? Don't ask me how it worked before it just did lol

You need to tell the Tivo remote what TV/Amp you have, and it will then control that with the volume controls. Info is here.

The only on demand source I use is BBC iPlayer. It will default to SD, but when you switch on HD it's crystal clear.

XFactor is ITV, I've just tested their web based OD player, it looks like it also defaults to some kind of low quality SD - however there's no way to toggle on HD. Seems a bit lame! So probably an ITV issue as opposed to TiVo or Virgin.

It's garbage isn't it.

I mean it's got potential. But it's Virgin Media at the end of the day, they probably got one of their apprentices to do it. I was expecting huge improvements with this software update they rolled out but all the kid has done is change the colours.

Navigating the UI - still utter **** and slow.
Iplayer - still broken
Netflix - never works

I cant even believe the development process behind this update. It's like they had a meeting about the millions of complaints about **** & slow UI, netflix, iplayer, and everything, and then just decided "you know what **** all these basic UI problems lets just get one of the apprentices to change the colours."

It really is one of the main reasons I won't go back to VM any time soon (srs). As there isn't much between the two services, I find Sky UI a breath of fresh air after using the TiVo garbage.

Q: Does VM have F1HD yet? If they get a better TiVo box then I'd be tempted to hop back come renewal time. Until then though, sod that, 40mb BB is enough for us.

I've just had VM installed, 100Mb.

Huge jump for me, came from 5Mb BT ADSL Broadband, where Fibre isn't available I joined BT last year they promised Fibre would arrive before the end of 2014, and so my contract is up today and my VM was installed yday.

I'm happy with the speeds, the VM installer didn't do a particularly good job installing the box outside, we had another box there and he just hooked the brown cover onto the old white box backing that was there already, I gave him a call and gave me the tools to fit the new brown box properly at least.

Can anyone tell me, I've ran a speedtest 3 times so far, 1 when it was installed the one above, 1 last night where it was only reading 50mbps dn/ 6mbps up, then this morning again where I got same great speed of 107/6 again. Why at night/evening does the speed drop to half? I haven't reached the limits I'm completely sure..

Might be some congestion. If you haven't already, set up a Thinkbroadband ping monitor and leave it running: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping. Would give a reasonable idea of how good the connection is.

Hey guys.

Does anyone know of a reason why a Superhub might be dropping connections to one particular laptop? I never have any problems with the WiFi, but my flatmate is always complaining that he has no service for hours at a time. It's not the distance from the router (just one thin wall) or the bandwidth (happens seemigly randomly, often when he's the only one around). Turning the hub firewall off completely didn't help either.

It seems to me like it's something to do with his usage. I know he streams basically non-stop and he's told me he always uses some wierd foreign VPN (goodness knows why...). I've also noticed he never seems to restart or refresh his laptop, maybe something?

Could the Surperhub be killing his connection because it doesn't like something he's trying to do or does it sound more like Windows connection wierdness because of his laptop?

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

I'll try what you've advised but just to be a little clearer, some speed tests different times of the day.

Why does it drop so bad? I mean from 107 Mbps to 5 Mbps, that's really poor. Is it a problem, or?

Yep, it's a problem. Ring Virgin and ask why? Maybe you're another person in an area that they've over-subscribed. (Or some things need fiddling with by an engineer.)

really dont get the dislike for the new UI lol

Because it's not a really a "new" UI. It's exactly the same UI just re-written in a newer language with different colours. It's still riddled with the same non-responsiveness.

Example, I just pressed home and it took 2.7 for the menu to fully open. Then I scroll down and press "My Shows" which took 4.5 seconds to open.

Furthermore, when you scroll down the Home menu, there is a noticeable delay for the sub menu items to render, even when you go to a menu item which was previously rendered. Typically UI designers use caching to ensure smooth UI traversal, however it seems the no-frills VM UI recalls/redraws UI elements for every interaction.

Furthermore, when you scroll between "Catch Up" and "On demand" in the home menu, the submenu flashes once before being displayed. This just shows that it's a no-frills and poorly tested UI cobbled together by an underpaid and/or inexperienced designer.

It really is one of the main reasons I won't go back to VM any time soon (srs). As there isn't much between the two services, I find Sky UI a breath of fresh air after using the TiVo garbage.

Yep, they have F1HD.

Would I be right in saying that VM allow you to cancel your contract early if you give them 30 days notice if they increase price mid contract? And this is irrespective of the OfCom rules that changed January 2014?

I started my contract December 2013 and really want cancel my 18 month contract early without penalty.
