Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Could someone please let me know what is the best way or website/app to test my internet? what test i should do and how?

Virgin installed my internet today and well it was great for a while and then as soon as 6 pm arrived it became relatively slow and sluggish. Internet speed test by Ookla was varying anything from 9mb all the way to 25mb. I am seriously considering cancelling this service, the person on the phone who sold me this contract said that my speeds should never fall below 10% of the advertised speed even during peak times. Even when playing online my pings were varying considerably and gameplay was jittery, anything from 28ms - 400+ms. I am in area 21

also the people installing the modem informed me that wireless signal should be strong enough so they don't need to install it upstairs on the 2nd floor hence they put all equipment in the living room and now I can barely get wireless signal upstairs on the 2nd floor. It would seem that I am not allowed to buy a cable and move the modem upstairs as this will cause issue with noise on the line and also its against their Terms of the contract. I would have to call a engineer out and pay almost £100 to do this.

Now, i am only on the 50mb service so nothing fancy but this is nonsense from the start, not even 1 months of good service to trick customers lol

thanks

Just get it cancelled now unless you want to get trapped into poor service.

£39 per month...

Month 1: £35
thereafter until month 18: £39

Hmmm ok - the lady on the phone said it would be £35 for the first 12 months - looks like I'd better call up again...

EDIT - Just checked with them - it's a 12 month contract @ £35/m - £39 thereafter until month 18. Phew.

Anyone else suffering in Area30?

I've had a message to say that F004759423 is now sorted....

Yep I'm Area 30, paying for 200mb Gamer which I get outside of peak but was getting 2mb last night mostly due to the below, its an over subscribed mess currently and Virgin can do little about it as they can't add bandwidth overnight.

Dont know how they carve their areas up tbh..

Nor me.
Virgin have tonight agreed to terminate my connection after 3 months of total rubbish as of the 10th March without charge leaving me free to get my reliable Fibre back.

YAY and good bloody riddens.

How do you find out what area you're under?

I'm in Manchester and for the past 2 weeks my internet has been terrible. I'm currently on the 100mb but most days I'm getting between 1-2mb and offpeak hours I'm around 20mb. Half of the time I'm struggling to play a 480p video on youtube and even then it keeps stopping and buffering which is frankly ****ing me off.

Is it just me or is anyone suffering from this too? I've also had the router dropping connection every 5 mins or so the past few days.

My first year has just come to an end with VM, which was all I committed to... anyone had any success re-negotiating a cheaper deal, threatening to leave etc.? I had a pretty good deal for the first 12 months, so I'm not thrilled at what its now risen to.

I re-negotiate at the end of every term and they always reduce the package costs. You can also cancel totally and hope that they ring you back before the 30 days termination. I've done this a few times and got the best deals overall. If they don't ring you back which has never happened you can always ring back a week or so later and see what they will offer you. Either way don't settle for the new price plan they now have you on.

Looking for people's opinions on what to do.

I spoke to VM the other day about an issue that randomly occurs from time to time. Basically over the last year sometimes the WiFi on my SH2ac appears to be connected but wireless devices can not browse.

The only way to resolve this is to reboot the router and then it's sorted until it happens again, the chap at virgin offered to send a SH3 out when I mentioned it but having read the issues with it I'm doubting whether to install it. I have it here now but is it better just to stay with the sh2? As I'm not sure if one is able to revert back to another router once I install the sh3.

Any thoughts appreciated

I had a similar issue, wifi would drop from iPhone/iPads, I ended up having to reebot the modem every other day, the new router has been fine for 7 days so far.

That's the same issue I had a while back, new router fixed it, although a wired AP and disabling the wifi on the VM router also worked...

I had my 200mb gamer broadband installed today, it's currently running about half the speed of my 80mb Infinity package was giving me, is this normal?

I'll try it again later and see if it's any better.
