Virgin Media Discussion Thread

There is no kinks the cable is flat under the skirting board. I used one of those couplers to join the cables together.

Noticed last night around 2am I did a speed test and got the full 200 meg, I have always had this 24/7 for the past year, looks like my area is congested then or they have decided to cap my speeds :( My ping is always 7ms below just looks like I am capped 50 meg during the days now.

What electronic kit of yours was turned off at 2am that would normally be switched on?

If there's anything you can think of try running speed tests with it switched on and off and see what results you get.

Ah I have placed my router next to an extension cord, it could be this? Though nothing was turned off. I will do some experimenting later on :d

You guys seen that VM are forcing people from the end of April to upgrade to SH3?

https://keepup.virginmedia.com/hubupgrade

I'll be writing another complaint letter before that date to make sure my account is not touched by this, and making sure to mention it when the complaints dept person calls me back mid April.

What's the pros and cons coming from the 2ac?

If you check back a few pages there will be all the info you need.

But in short, the SH3 has a major issue with latency spikes caused by a flaw in the Intel chipset that has been talked about and documented all over the tech web. It is an old issue, but only recently came to light since ISPs started dishing out routers and modems using the Puma 6 chipset at a mass level.

Since it is an Intel chipset, only Intel can fix it, but in the USA, there have been BETA firmwares in testing which have not seen any solid success as of yet. So the issue will remain with the SH3 for the forseeable future, or until Virgin Media replace it with an SH4 using a different chipset.

The latency spikes issue will only affect people using services that rely on accurate realtime communications (such as gaming). You would experience rubber banding, lags and random ping spikes.

As well as the huge thread on VM forums talking about it.

People including myself have written in to complain about it and been given the SH2AC as a replacement which has been authorised by the complaints department directly, because nobody in tech support at VM knows that the SH2ac works on 200Mb so will flat out refuse to send one out, even though it 100% does works, and is confirmed to work by VM administration.

As it stands, the only pro of the SH3 over the SH2 is that the SH3 supports the 300Mb package which the 2ac does not. There are no other benefits of note.

Sorry to say this but it looks like your efforts to get a SH2 were in complete vain.

If you only have Broadband services with us and you do not upgrade your old bit of broadband kit, we’ll close your account and send you your final bill.

If you do not upgrade your old broadband kit with a new Hub 3.0 by 30th April 2017 it will stop working.

I doubt they will cater for you specially after such a clear announcement. There's always a catch when **** gets rammed down your throat for free, a bit like Windows 10. ;)

The VM reps were unsure, but if that's the case then that is of course fine.

Whether that "broadband only" quote above is false or not doesn't matter, I don't have just broadband alone.

Interesting. :) Would the above fault also appear if you put it in modem mode?

Yes, modem mode still uses the same chipset.

Never used this thinkbroadband monitor service before. I have a section where its terribly high with packet loss but this was when I was downloading at full speed, completely saturating my connection. Is that normal?

The initial patch of Packet loss was when my router was set up to not return random ping requests so had to change that setting so ignore that

So is this why every 2 weeks or so I need to reboot my router because of ping spikes every 2 minutes while gaming? Usually rebooting the router fixes it for a week or 2 though.
