Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Just spotted the following update regarding the SuperHub 3 latency issues.
The following issues were resolved in release 9.1.93V:
2.3.1 TCP/UDP/DNS Latency Issues
Tracking No.
PD 24878
Description
Multiple latency issues have been observed:
- UDP upstream delays during rate-limited TCP traffic
- HTTP delays under heavy TCP Ack load
- Slow HTTP session initiation
- Slow DNS responsiveness
2.3.5 Ping Latency Intervals Too High
Tracking No.
PD 22502
Description
The time interval to receive a response to a transmitted ping is longer than required by subscribers with time-sensitive applications
2.3.7 DNS Latency Issue
Tracking No.
PD 23345
Description
Under certain conditions, the modem may drop DNS packets, causing the applications to retransmit and increasing latency of DNS queries.
It seems Arris have started releasing an updated firmware in America that looks to mostly rectify the ongoing latency issues. How long until Virgin Media start dishing it out is anybodies guess.

Usually 6 months minimum if their past is anything to go by.

Yes it can.

Just set up a new account as my street went live for orders yesterday and i ordered 300mb full house bundle. Got it for a great price with a really good discount as they messed me around quite a bit.

Installation is in 2 weeks,I'm really excited as i've never had fibre optic, i'm currently paying £30 a month for sky's 8 Down/0.6 up and i just cancelled after they put the phone down on me multiple times. So the fact i'll be getting 300mbps is going to be such a leap, and i won't have to keep my pc on for 2 days to download GTA V!

Now just pray you aren't in a congested area!

I was under the impression that the latency issues are there regardless of whether it's in modem mode or not.

Fingers crossed they only just finished ripping up the street 2 days ago. I think anything will be a upgrade from what i'm currently getting though :D

Will keep a eye on it for a few days for sure to make sure everything is running as smooth as i hope.

Really annoyingly I paid to upgrade from the 50mb-100mb package 2 weeks ago (needed a faster upload). Am I stuck paying more now? I don't have any upgrade options in my account.

I cant see any increase on the website, mine lists vivid 200 which I am on.

I got a new SH3 yesterday as my old S2 broke, kept getting low speeds tech said the board had fried, well the new SH3 is mega quick on 5GHz wifi. :) Impressed so far.

Gave them a call to get the new lower price for my 200Mbit tier. They said it would not require new equipment (well duh). I better not get a SH3 magically turning up.

My monthly service charge is now up to £85 for 200mb, TV XL (+ 1 extra TIVO) and Talk Anytime. PHoned retentions and they won't budge. They say it will even go up to £105 in August as I lose some loyalty discount that is apparently being applied! We don't have sky sports or anything.

We take the talk anytime because it's only about £8 extra a month over standard phone, to be able to pick up the landline anytime and not worry about the kids phoning mobiles, plus we have bad signal in our house for mobiles. The TV XL they pretty much tier it so that you have to get the full TV XL if you want HD channels and/or BT Sport, which we do.

The broadband...we stayed on top tier of 200mb because historically in our area it used to be that the top tier went to a different UBR and had less contention. Not sure if this changed. I find the internet speed great when it works, but it's the reliability that is the factor. It's got worse over the last year. I think some of it is the Super Hub 2 that I have. Sometimes it just needs a reboot as the wireless clients all drop offline and can't reconnect.

Dunno what to do really. Is £85 a month too high for that? It used to be in the 60s a few years ago.

So if the speed tiers have gone from: 50, 100, 200, 200 gamer
to: 100, 200, 200 gamer, 300

then what happens if you were on say 200? Would you go on to 200, or 200 gamer automatically? i.e. Drop to 2nd tier or stay on 3rd. I suspect what would happen is you drop to 2nd tier and still pay the higher price.
