Virgin Media Discussion Thread

i called vm to upgrade to 300Mb and they said i can't.. so i did a live chat and the person said yes thats fine so she put the upgrade order though for the 300Mb + sky sports for free for 3 months all for £59.26 + £13 rolling discount

so from tomorrow i'll have 300Mb/player tv with sky sports/phone M for £46.26

Does anyone know how to apply a 'partner' discount to a existing connection? I see on the new customer portal for it you can get 100Mb for £27.25 and the gamer package that I am interested in is £37.25. Currently paying £36.24 a month for 150Mb. The guy on web chat wasn't able to budge from the normal prices, so a slight saving for staying on my current speed or £1 extra for 200Mb.

Anyone know what might be the problem here? Oversubscribed area? Seems to happen during peak times, makes using the internet painfully slow, youtube buffering, unable to game etc.

Given the very sharp rise and fall in latency on the BQM, it actually looks like something on your connection is causing that. Perhaps something you have installed is doing some uploading/downloading during those hours.

Over subscribed areas do have increased latency, but you'd expect the rise and fall to be gradual as the load on the CMTS builds, it would be odd for it to just suddenly spike within a 1 minute window like that if it was solely an area issue.

Definitely looks like downloads to me. Sure the connection isn't the best, but it's better than most VM I've seen. If it's congestion you usually get rising peaks and troughs at peak times rather than a sudden increase, almost like a sin wave.

So i spoke to Chat on Thursday and upgraded from Vivid 150 to Vivid 200 and i can't get anything more than 160mb using my currently Setup.

SH2 hardwared to PC = 200mb
SH2 to N66u (latest merlin fw) to PC = 160mb

CPU usage on n66u is 95-100% when line is maxing out and looks like its causing the bottle neck. Anyone else managed to get n66u working with 200mb?

Do you have QoS turned on? Setting that turns off hardware acceleration and causes high CPU loads, with speeds limited to ~150mbps.

I have an ac66u which does the same.

Called Thursday asking to upgrade from 200 to 300, cost me an extra £10/month. Superhub 3 arrived this morning. Running modem mode connected to my AC88U, getting some nice speeds, 330mbps down, 21mbps up via Speedtest.net, Steam is showing downloads of 36MB/s

QOS turned off. NAT Acceleration off also, but doesn't make a difference if NAT Acceleration is set to auto. Recently updated to the latest version of Merlin and tried a factory reset of the Asus but still nothing more than 160MB.

From the info on the VM site it seems to indicate that the 300Mb is traffic managed whereas the 200Mb Gamer is not traffic managed. Can anybody confirm this?

Any one got slow speeds tonight?

My download speed is resembling dial-up at the moment, done a reboot on the router and this seems to of lost the 2.4ghz LED :o

What happens if you return the router to stock firmware rather than Merlin? That router should not bottleneck you at all according to online reviews. It tops out at around 700mbps both WAN to LAN and LAN to WAN.

Is hardware acceleration listed as enabled in the tools menu? If it is then it's rather odd, but if not then that is why. Juts a case of finding out the cause (QoS, IPtraffic, etc)
