Virgin Media new next generation TV service

wonder what happens if your not on 50mb, perma download limit from people watching on demand stuff

The TV/On-demand stuff is independent from your internet bandwidth at the moment. And I'm quite sure/hope it'll stay that way.

Looks very impressive!

We want to change our Broadband/TV/Phone package, and it's looking more and more like a change to Virgin...

However, how early is "Early 2011"? We were looking to change this month... Would it be better if we waited for this TiVo thing before swapping? Or should we just take the leap now?

That looks great.
youtube but no lovfilm, seems a bit odd. Although I suppose a bit of competition with the on demand stuff.

Seems like on the AVForums people are saying it will be £3 a month. And a cost upfront.

EDIT:

Virgin Media TV powered by TiVo will begin to roll-out from mid-December. Standard price of £199**, plus £26.50 per month*** for the XL TiVo package which features over 160 channels, an unrivalled TV on demand library and access to all standard HD channels. For further information, or to register for interest in the Virgin Media TV powered by TiVo service, visit: www.virginmedia.com/TiVo.

Notes to Editors:
* The service is launching with two tuners and will be updated with three tuners in early 2011.
** Standard £40 installation costs apply.
*** When taken with a Virgin phone line. Monthly cost is £32.50 when taken without a phone line.

We won't be paying any more per month tbh or an upfront cost. £96.50 per month is enough, plus call charges to 0870/0845 numbers etc

We had the engineer round on friday night to install a new samsung box, he was telling me about the Tivo partnership.

He had been on a training day and they got a chance to play with the proposed device, he said that it was lightning fast, great UI, Massive storage (1Tb) but there were some little annoyances.

1) It has intelligent recording, whereby it looks at your recordings and records programs/movies of a similar type, you then have to decide if you want to keep them/delete them....on the version the engineer played with he was unable to turn the feature off

2)The box isnt as attractive as the Samsung ones

3) the on demand stuff was still slow and hung quite often

4) It WILL be expensive, the figure bandied around was a one-off payment of £150 then extra on top of your monthly bill.

He may be completely misinformed of course, and i am sure that most of the issues are simply a software fix?

Quite the opposite to what I've heard.

Add to that engineers can be unreliable.

Oh and I haven't had an issue with OD stuff hanging.

How is that expensive a current v+HD box is £150 but usually have deals on or can knock them down and it's a mere £3 a month extra.

what do you mean from hanging? OD stuff is slow but never had any issues with it.

Its about time they ditched that godawful interface. Talk about scattergun approach. You could be there for ages trying to find the show you want.

Don't phone them up and directly ask for a samsung box. Ask them indirectly: "I was wondering if you can provide a different box, as I'm having some problems (insert problems here), I was hoping you'd have be able to give me a different type of box."

I did that and they sent out an engineer with a shiny new Sammy box within the week.

just say ur current one is too high or something.
thats what i did, and they switched it for the samsung which is abit smaller

This is one of the main features of a TIVO and is very good imho as it finds quite a lot of good programs that I would have otherwise have missed.

Been using my Tivo series 1 for 10 years and can't wait to get the new version
