Right, is this real or a myth lol

ADSL ONLY. those with cable read only lol

--------------------------------------------

Right, virgin media`s fastest package is speeds up to 20meg.
now on my phone line on virgin media`s package i have selected the 20meg, and there line checker shows my link is capable of between 8 and 9meg.

the real speed i get is 7.2meg from www.speedtest.net.

now i have been told if i went with Talk Talk. they could offer me 15.9meg as the lowest speed i would get up to 24meg the highest i would get.

they say the reason for beating virgin media is simple virgin media are useing ADSLMAX modulation in our local exchange. wich has a cap of 8meg max.

now talk talk say that they have upgraded our exchange to there service called

ADSL2+ Modulation wich cuts out the 8meg line cap.

now my question is are they talking crap because virgin media when i phoned them said i wouldnt get anything higher than 8meg with 1 meg of traffic so 7.02 is pritty good as my line is getting the max, but talk talk are telling me diffrent.

who do you beleave. lol

who here has Talk Talk useing adsl2+ on there maximum service 24meg
if you are one of those please go to www.speedtest.net and run the test and also run the ping test and post your results please im mighty intrested.

Other peoples speed tests won't help you at all, ADSL speed depends on your line quality and line length.

Post your line stats (should be somewhere in your router settings bit, you want Line attenuation and Noise Margin/SNR and sync speed) and people will be able to tell you roughly what you should get on an ADSL2+ service.

Both Virgin and TalkTalk are generally considered to be poor ISPs (virgin on adsl, cable is different), so it is probably worth checking www.samknows.com for your exchange and see which other ISPs are available as LLU.

Well cannot talk about Virgin's adsl service but I can comment on TalkTalk's new pro package, I moved to it on 2nd December from an entanet reseller, thus far I have been impressed at quiet times (most of the day) my downloads from usenet happily tick down at about 1.2-1.4mbps.

During the weekend mania I still manage to tick down at 800ish mbps.

I have used there talktalkmembers website to have my profile tweaked which was done within 24 hours and I sync happily now at 15mbps and achieve about 12-13 in speed tests which with a 30db Attenuation on mine line im more than happy with.

on Entanet I was getting 2-4mb at most times.

Hope this helps or feel free to chuck any TT questions this way and I'll do what I can to answer em.

talktalk have unbundled exchanges, yes, so in theory you *could* get more than 8Mb max on ADSL '1'

What you will *actually* get is anyone's guess :D

My m8 has talktalk. For ages we couldn't figure out why he had 1Mb upstream then I realised they'd invaded the exchange :p

Sorry, but can people PLEASE learn the difference between kbps, mbps, MB/s and KB/s.

None of your tick down* speeds make any sense.

*wtf is "tick down" when it's at home? :confused:

I had many problems with vergin so i went with be there, A friend of mine has been without internet for 3 weeks now because of a lose connection some were with there wireing and has to wait till the 18th for it to be sorted.

A friend also worked and quit for them as they treat workers badly.

I'm sorry but that's BS, absolute e-peen enlarging BS.

Or is it an innocent typo?

I honestly have no idea if he's saying his internet is good or rubbish tbh, he could have either 16Mbps or 1.6Mbps, but because he doesn't actually type any of the speeds correctly I don't know :(. I'd guess he meant k not m in the above quote tho.

Innocent typo :) Sorry for any confusion.

Should have been 800kbps going upto 1400kbps during off peaktimes.

This far I have found Talk Talks Pro service excellent. And dont regret moving from ADSL24 its also saving me around £5 a month.

Tick Down = download

So you are getting a whole 100 - 175KB/s download, and you call that excellent?

Download = Download.

Tick Down = WTF.

Forgive me for the incorrect use of K and k.

Downloads range from 800Kbps to 14000Kbps

I find the tone of your posts rude and confrontational, I am simply trying to help a fellow forum member.

I've been happy virgin (NTL before they merged) customer for over 5years now and never had any problems with them. I think the only time I didn't have connection over this long period was when there was blackout and no electricity ; ).

And anyways, maybe it's just me but why would you need speed higher than 7-10Mb ?
It's a movie in 15min anyways, if you keep downloading at such high speed for long you'll need half tera hdd every week.

Azraeluk, it's not your use of k that we're talking about, k and K are the same, it's b and B.

b=bits
B=bytes (1Byte=8bits)

I'm assuming you're on about 16Mbps, so you download at 1.6MBps?

Or you could be on 1.6Mbps, and download at 1.6Mbps, which is about 200kBps.

That's why people get annoyed with people not using the correct symbols, as there's a huge difference between speeds if you're using the wrong one by accident/not knowing :).

I was so annoyed yesterday as the plumber said he would be coming round at 8. I therefore cancelled my Saturday night plans and got an early night. I got up at 7.30 and made a cup of tea for the plumber but he never showed. Deciding to forget about it I went back to bed. Anyway, later on I went across the country to see my mum and at 8.05pm I got a phone call from an angry plumber because I wasn't in.

... here endith my stupid story.

Thanks for the clarification Bloomfield.

You are correct I am on 16Mbps and download at 1.6MBps
