Friend of mine is looking at getting Virgin Media, she wants to know:

1) how stable is the 10 meg broadband? Worthy of the 360 online on it?
2) Line rental included in the price?
3) is the price of £14 a month (inc phone line) true or are there any hidden charges?
4) how stable is their broadband? She is currently with tiscali and mentioned it is awful, slow, and impossible to use the 360 with.

the cable broadband is waaaaay more stable than any broadband going through the telephone network

the price looks about right.

they might charge you a quid for paper bills.

£1.25 charge for paperbill.

10Mb is fine for the 360, I had no problems playing COD4. Altough some people on here note having terrible problems so I don't think you will find a universal answer.

It's £14pm if you take a phone line from them for another £11pm, otherwise it's £20pm just for the 10mb broadband. You don't need a phone line for cable broadband.

I think the cable/fibre optic network is way better than the BT overhead copper cables. I've never had bad stability issues, though there have been 1 or 2 instances where the whole street/area has been out.

I've recently got the L broadband + phone + M TV ~ £25 per month (I think) with free land line calls on the weekends.

So far really stable connection, I've not seen it dip below 9.5mb even at peak times. The cable TV choice is not much better that freeview and the image quality is worse (although you can get on demand which is good). The £1.25 charge for paperbill can be removed if you move to ebilling.

I've been playing games on PC and PS3 with no problems, ping is pretty low.

edit: in terms of customer service they've got some awful call centers, but when my phone line was activated and didn't work they sent an engineer round quickly and didn't charge for it.

cut virgin off in the new year and signed with 'be' dsl 8mb for £13.5Opm. their service has been 1OO% in every way. so whats your definition of "better"?

(im not comparing their fibre-optic 5Omb line obviously its a premium service)

we had 50mb fibre optic broadband (I think it was 50, might have been 20) and it was blisteringly quick. Would download at least 2,000kb/second.

I can't fault the stability of Virgin cable internet, I think in the last 5 years of using Telewest then Virgin I've lost connection for a total of about 1 day.

Cable at my house is atrocious, and based on that I would not recommend Virgin to anyone.

Cable at my girlfriends house is brilliant. Always able to max it out, even at peak periods. My house is..5 minutes away :/.

i have used 10mb virgin cable line for around 2 months now since returning to UK from australia. I play counterstrike 1.6 on a daily basis and i'm nearly on the verge of switching provider. from midday through to about 9-10pm I cannot play any counterstrike because as soon as I join the server my ping jumps to about 500 and causes my game to freeze and crash. Complete jokes. There are some threads about this on thesgl forums as well as a few other counterstrike/esport related websites with hundreds and hundreds of UK gamers raging at virgin media to sort this out....and still nothing at all has changed
