Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but didn't seem to fit elsewhere.

I am with Virgin for TV and have the standard cable box.

My brother had a V Box installed a while ago, and whilst there, the engineer left another spare V Box, which has never been accounted for or retrieved.

Is it possible for me to set this up myself - ie attach the coaxial and insert my card, and away I go, or do Virgin need to verify something / set it up etc?

Of course they do, you need to be on the V+ package.

It is a different menu system with all the extras for recording and what not, so the will have to access it to set it up.
 
Is it a v box or a v+ ?

Anyway the cards are paired to the box so you need a different card for each box.

Also, when you plug it in it will report itself to virgin and they will know the box is 'online' (and what you're watching etc ... )

You should be able to get the 'free' channels without the card, but it might keep popping up a notice telling you your smart card is not inserted.
