Virginmedia expected to make their 50mb announcement today

Had the 50mb connection for a week now, and you really can tell the difference over the 20mb connection i had before.

Just tried speedtest.net and had

Download: 79441 kb/s
Upload: 1572 kb/s

it could be 500meg for all i care. When will they give us a decent upload rate, so we can use our connections for I don't know, things OTHER than downloading (which they don't seem to be happy about us doing)
They're never going to do that as businesses would stop buying leased lines.

No 50MB in BA13 postcode yet, no idea when it'll be here. :(

8pm. Wepages taking 4-5 minutes to load, Virgins Status page won't even load.

Can't sign into Steam, MSN, WoW..

Business as usual at peak times then.

Never had anything like this, are you 100% sure its your cable and not your router/pc settings?

The stm everyone keeps commenting on, Im what I would regard as a high useage customer and I've never noticed my speeds drop to what I would say is unaceptable.

Streaming video, torrents, uploading files on pretty much a 24/7 basis theres normally something active, but I find if theres something I want to DL its normally a decent speed, I've been downloading a lot of free to play games at the moment some of these in excess of 1Gb and never had amny trouble wether I download in teh morning, evening or afternoon. nor have I ever seem my torrent traffic throtttled, then again anything I download is normally finished within a 10minute window. Max speed last night was 2.40MegaByte/s this is on a 20Mb connection.

Im not wanting to sound condesending to anyone at all on here but Im starting to wonder, how many people are expecting 20Mb from every site 24/7, most sites out there dont even upload at half, hell even a quarter of that. I've seen people complain about BB speeds from virgin on multiple forums, myself never having encountered this, if anyone is having slow speeds with torrents chuck me the torrent file and I'll let you know what speed I get at this side.

Im was looking forward to the 50Mb but this was back when I was told it was going to have a 5Mb upload rate... 1.5.. think I'll keep my money

50Mb apparantly ready to go in NE2 area.

Got an installation date of the 15th :). Does anyone know the model of router+dongle they supply you? All I know is they're from Netgear and shipped after they've installed? Surely it would be better if they gave the router/dongle when they installed the modem?

I was informed that VM will supply a wireless router but will not supply a dongle, you have to pay/supply your own.
As for the router the one they sent me was nuthin fancy, standard Netgear affair, small rectangle/oval white thing, I just had a look for it but cant find it as I kept with my buffallo router.

It says online they're supposed to send a wireless-n router+dongle? Have you got a model number on the netgear router? :).

aah this wasn't N that I received, justa standard white netgear jobby.
Standard firmware from what I gather too, they must have changed the routers that theyre sending out. I'll have a dig and see if I can find it

Mine's been installed but I can't test it yet as I'm at work and the guy didn't know how to plug the modem into my router. Apparently he hasn't left a new router though. Am I supposed to get one as part of the package?

My installation is due tomorrow :). Does the 28 days to wait for the router+dongle start from when the new modems fitted or from when I ordered the 50mb broadband?

So what is the word on throttling and this 50Mb service? Will it ever be introduced? If so then virgin can frankly get lost. £50 a month is a huge sum of money to be shelling out for an ISP, I still think i'm paying through the nose for their 20Mb service!

I'm very annoyed with virgin's throttling policy, it doesn't normally effect me but recently I have been doing some meaty downloading during the day, I downloaded at full 20mbit speed for an hour (6GB transfered) now i've been bumped down to 5mbit. All for £37 a month.. nice.

If virgin had a simular throttling policy for their 50Mb service then christ.. that would translate to only 30mins of full speed service.

Their saying traffic management as early as 3rd quarter 09, and router is 28 days from fitment of the modem.

Of course.

Indeed. As people start streaming HD content and it becomes the norm, people will hit these caps in minutes.

"Here is a 50mb connection. Please enjoy reading text based sites and fetching your pop3 mail at lightning speeds."
