Virginmedia expected to make their 50mb announcement today

I'm very annoyed with virgin's throttling policy, it doesn't normally effect me but recently I have been doing some meaty downloading during the day, I downloaded at full 20mbit speed for an hour (6GB transfered) now i've been bumped down to 5mbit. All for £37 a month.. nice.

If virgin had a simular throttling policy for their 50Mb service then christ.. that would translate to only 30mins of full speed service.

give them a phone saying you are thinking of going to sky. I did and I now get Large TV, basic phone and 20MB broadband for £42, If I took 10Mb it would have been £34 a month

Defo considering upgrading from 20mb to this, just dont want to pay em £80.... Even with the new N router. Speeds are looking good from people i know with it so far

The thing that gripes me is the stupid data limits before you get throttled and the fact they pretty much hide that fact on their website.

50Mb installed yesterday, the increased upload is very handy! Just have to wait 28 days for the new router+dongle to arrive now

Is this based on the current packaged restrictions though? Wouldn't there be a top tier restriction package i.e. you can download 5gb before cap instead of 2gb?

I had this installed on Tuesday, sadly it was giving me 2kb/s and 90% packet loss and took a couple of days to start working properly (server hamsters were still being fattened up for 50 mb speed me thinks)

The wireless stuff arived on Thursday 2 days after install by courier (business post) sadly netgear do not do 64 bit drivers of any kind so I can't use it due to both my OS's being 64 bit (XP and Windows 7) so thats a bit wasted on me.

So far seen speeds of up to 3 mb/s but not had much to test it on yet so can't comment on if it is really 2.5x faster than 20mb from Virgin until I get connected to something capable of maxing my connection.

I would asume the usage limits will be raised to reflect the increased download speed, or at least yu would expect it for 50 quid.

Don't. I'm not terribly pleased so far. The speed seems to fluctuate more than my 20Mb which was always around 18-20mb. I've had as low as 15mbit with my 50mb using www.speedtest.net. The upload is always a solid 1.5-1.6mb

. I just received the "free" wireless-n router and dongle they supply, arrived 4 days after installation. I received the following:

Netgear Wireless-N Router (Model WNR200)
Netgear RangeMax USB 2.0 Adapter (Model WN111)

They're having a laugh with only 1.5Mbit upstream with 50Mbit downstream.

The net isn't read-only these days.

doubt it, its very rare i get my full 20mb (partly down to download source, partly ISP fault) but 50mb forget it! lol and £51 p/month is crazy!

also is anyone getting slow speeds on their newssite: news.virginmedia.com
i can only seem to get around 300 - 500 kb/s

im meant to get 2048! but im used to getting 1000 normally :mad:

You should actually be getting 2400KB/sec with 20mbit. If you're using a router have you tried hooking the modem directly upto a computer first? I've seen quite a few cases of people saying it's Virgin's fault when in fact their router is holding the connection back.

Not sure who you are with, but I read somewhere that BeThere are going to introduce 48mb to customers. Hopefully that will happen with O2 as well. I hope so!!

ok bad math from me

but my modem is connected direct to pc, and no networking of any sort (only the 1 pc and thats it) so its Virgins fault!, they may be immune to the phone exchange thing, but the ammount of customers they have still creates problems

looking back at your correction, i work it out at 2560 KB/s, i get this by taking the 20480 kbps (kilobits) and dividing it by 8 (as there are 8 bits to a byte) to get my new answer of 2560 KB/s (kilobytes) meaning that my connection is even worse!!!!

edit: i can get over 18000 kbps on speedtest.net, with 10 ping :eek:

Not 50meg related but just found out my router has been holding back my connection of 10meg and been restricting it to around 4-5 since the upgrade. ARGH

50mb is awesome, however I found my draytek was holding me back to a max of 25mb, put the netgear in and bam 50mb no problem, draytek served me proud for many years

What model Netgear is it? I'm looking to buy a new router now and don't know a great deal about them. I've had a linksys for about 4 years or so

Its quite amusing - all through the newsgroups when the 50Mb was announced, the so called management were in there saying no throttling would be introduced as it was on the new docsis so the network would be fine.....

And now we read all the posts in here......classic VM.
