HI all, never got round to putting F-secure on my dads laptop...he now has a virus. Heck. So the synmptoms are only noticable online, On start up there is a screen that says something about been unprotected, you can then go about your business for around 10/15 seconds then Boom, I just shuts down the window "both firefox and Ie" Email work tho. I got a copy of F-secure and Spybot on a disc..placed them on his computer, When i try install Spybot on initial installation is says it cant connect says "error server could not be established" i Also installed F-secure which asked for a re-boot yet now it always hangs when iy boots back up in windows now....

Any tip? Iv also tried a system restore in safe mode yet it dosent want to let me click NEXT.

Any tips would be awsome.

Thanks :)

Adam.:)

First point of call is to clear items out of startup in msconfig.

Click on Start - Run (or type in the search box if Vista). Type msconfig and press enter.

Click on the startup tab and clear all items then reboot.

Also, in IE7 go to tools - addons and disable anything that looks suspicious.

Run ccleaner and clear internet cache.

Run NOD32 trial version.

If you are still having problems, run hijackthis and post the log.

Why are you taking this so seriously? You ask for advice on a laptop, someone offers advice and a logical reason why such nastities are on there. You then set about proving your manliness by saying you hang with "puddy tats".

It seems somebodys ego has been hurt :D

Build this on a clean PC, updating the defs as you do so, and then use to boot and clean the laptop.

Use XP with SP2 as the source o/s if poss and depending on the h/w in the laptop you may need to nlite in the drivers first. Also burn it to a CDRW/DVDRW if poss as chances are you might mess up the build of the first one and need to re do it.

How did this go so off-topic? C'mon guys!

+1 For malwarebytes

Spybot, ad-aware are next best imo, probably worth running all of them (not at the same time obv).

Another good port of call would be trend micro online scan (google it) or download a trial of bitdefender/nod32 and scan with those.

you havent mentioned what OS ?

for AV Kaspersky or Avira trials or even the free version of Avira.

follow these up with Maleware Bytes and Super Antispyware.

finish up with Combo Fix
