Vista Crashes and Deletes Necessary Files

Vista had been behaving well in the few months i've had it up until just recently. Vista will crash in this order:

1. Music stops playing
2. Unable to select other open windows or apps
3. Only mouse cursor seems to be active
4. Cursor turns into an infinite loop of the blue circular loader
5. Sometimes it comes back to life but only if the HD activity light is flashing

Twice i've used CHKDSK and twice it's had to repair the same errors. Now the PC is incapable of booting saying there is a config file missing, even trying to repair the Vista via the bootdisk won't work. Is there a solution or anything to prevent this in the future? Cheers

I can't name names, but it says deleting corrupt... and recovering orphan file.... etc, what piece of hardware would be causing this?
