Vista defrag - does it last forever?

My computers HD is only a month old (250Gig). I had only just recently finished installing all my previous programmes and files when I decided to upgrade to Vista earlier this week (clean install). Having finished the process yesterday (all old files and programmes re-installed) I thought I would do a registry clean up and registry defrag (used a 5 day trial version from ABEXSO). All that was left then was a disk cleanup and defrag of my HD. Little shocked by the dumbed down Vista defrag interface but started the process of defragging. So far the defrag has gone on for some 5 hours and I've no idea when it will end - is this a record or have other Vista users had similar experiences?

My main HDD where Vista is installed is 160Gb, that took 3hrs to complete, just to give you some sort of an idea, although only 15Gb is taken up

It may also defrag all the drives attached to the comp as well??

Is Diskeeper compt. with Vista?? The last time I installed Diskeeper it wasn’t, that was 2007 as well..

Don't know. Go to their site, they have an email address to request the Vista patch/upgrade.

PerfectDisk works fine in Vista too.

Now at 6 hrs and counting - my 250gig HD has 89gig used. I hope it doesn't defrag the Slave Drive as well as that is 160 gig with 60 gig used mostly with backup files etc. At this rate I will need to replace the PC before the defrag has finished. :rolleyes:

o&o defrag 8.6 works perfectly in vista and vista64

Storage drives will defrag a lot fast anyway. If its literally just files on the second drive, it should be done in a matter of minutes unless you install things to it to.

System drives usually take the longest.

Use partitions for OS & Programs/Games, de-fraging storage drives is pretty pointless and will just wear out your hd quicker.

I never ever defrag.. I keep it tidy. But i end up formating about every 6 months.. I must try and defrag more! Always doing somthing on it though!

Vista's defrag works in low priority I/O mode - so anything else you're doing will take priority.

It is also one of the tasks that automatically runs in the background, so there's no real need to run it yourself.

A drive is hardly likely to fail due to excessive defragging.

Defragging a Hd use's up it's MTBF significantly

Now 8 hours and still going plus I haven't used the PC for anything else in that time apart from these postings - I should be running a sweep to see who gets the nearest with completion time. I think MS are having a laugh with this defrag programme though.

Did you disable anti-virus before you started?

Google did a hard disc test and found no correlation between hard disc usage and hard disc failure.

i dont know all the specifics behind it, but i reckon you're wrong

a fragmented drive will be 'worn out' quicker imo, becuase each time the pc looks for that file it'll be all over the place, if you defrag it then it'll be all in one place, so the drive has to do less work over time
