hey guys,

i will be building a new pc soon for vista and wanted about how vista will affect the games that i can play. the questions are:

(1) - *THE MAIN QUESTION* Can i play games that i normaly use in XP in vista (battlefield2, 2142, WoW, dawn of war, various steam games)

(2) - Do i have to have a DX10 graphics card to run vista ?

(3) - will any applications work in vista on launch, for example:

firewalls and anti virus
msn
Xfire
DVD player programs
Can i use a dual boot system with xp on 1 HDD and vista on another ?

Thanx for any help

Alex

ive heard existing games that run on xp will run 10-15% slower on vista

also theres still lots of conflicts in vista ie. programs not working right or not installing right and lots of other little bugs!....it still doesnt feel quite finished!

driver support is still sketchy!

True, but that's obviously to be expected seeing as it's brand new. Only a matter of a few weeks till everything is ironed out. :)

Drivers and shareware apps etc, however, were sorted very quickly.

The problem isn't Vista itself, so we arn't looking for it to be done like XP as with a service pack. The problem is the drivers and programs arn't up to scratch yet. Drivers are pretty stable now but with poor performance. This will improve greatly I think.

As for program compatibility why would you want a third party software firewall? The windows firewall and a hardware firewall (ie. your router) should be more than enough. If you are desperate for a software firewall then I suggest doing a quick search to see which are compatible. On the AV front there are several solutions that work with Vista now, again a quick search will bring them up for you. MSN and DVD player programs seem to work so far (I've tested cyberlink and pinnacle). Xfire works for me too.
