Vista gaming sound issue

Just recently I have noticed an audio problem whilst gaming, most notably so far in Bioshock and TF2.

In Bioshock the audio cuts out for about 1 second, sometimes when I move from one room to another, usually when I shotgun someone at point-blank range, and after a message log plays.

In TF2 there is a noticable crackle and pop, and at the menu screen where you hear the crows squawking, before they finish the audio pops and their screech abruptly stops rather than finishing and fading away. In the game when I'm a Heavy, after tapping the alt-fire to cycle the machine gun, at the point where the audio changes from cycling up to cycling down the gun noise cuts out for about 1 second then resumes the cycle down audio.

I can't recall this issue in Bioshock until just recently. The only thing I can think of is that I was installing and trying out various codec packages including K-Lite which is now fully installed. At one point after installing, upon Vista booting up a message popped up saying that some codec was conflicting with another. I ignored this and just uninstalled and reinstalled the package and there was no more error. Is it possible that an audio codec would interfere with my sound drivers? I don't have any issue playing music or watching movies, just gaming.

Help much appreciated.
