Bought a copy of vista 32bit (realise i should have got 64 bit now, wasnt thinking when i bought it :o) formatted and installed...

Runs great just around the OS, browing files etc, searching for things, installing anything... no problems at all BUT

As soon as i run any game(mainly WoW, CSS and TF2), i just get terrible game performace.... i have every latest up to date driver for vista and my hardware. I used to beable to play these games maxed out, even when i reduce the settings in game it just doesnt help.

pc spec...

ATI 256mb 1950 pro @ stock
AMD64 3500 @ stock
DFI LANPARTY UT ULTRA-D
Corsair XMS 2x1gb PC 3200
Maxtor 250gb

I have every vista update i just dont know what to do..... apart from roll back to XP but i really rather not...

Heres a couple of images that may help anyone giving advice...

task manager with wow running

dxdiag

Thanks for any help you can give,
Sean

Somethings not right ,I have played WoW ,CS,TFC etc with my Vista x64(7800gt card 3800+ X2 CPU) all run fine.

You tried turning off Windows Defender real time scan?..Also install latest DX 9.0c version(recommended for older DX9 games),I believe lastest version is dated Nov 2007,http://www.filehippo.com/download_directx/ or from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

That's nForce 4 ultra board right?..Might as well grab latest chipset drivers from Nvidia's website too.

Don't mean to rub salt in the wounds - but I get great performance in Vista (64) in things like TF2.

I am using an Nvidia 8800GTS, so maybe its a problem with ATI drivers for Vista?!

Mind you, I always found the ati drivers to be great for my 9600, so I'd be surprised if they didn't have some good drivers out for Vista by now.

If I were you, I'd try some other drivers versions. I'd be quite surprised if it wasn't a driver issue of some kind.

heres what ive just done...

- installed the lastes dx9.0c
- rolled back to cat 7.3's from cat 7.10's
- reinstalled mobo drivers

just loaded up wow and it seems better.... but still not smooth :-(

just in alterac valley at the moment in wow and ive wacked all the video settings back up to max and it all seems very playable again.... :)

not sure what did it but thanks for the help guys! will hopefully report back with steam results soon

Vista uses dx10, you might be better off reinstalling that

Actually you can update both,DX9.0c updates are 100% compatible with Vista.

FYI I keep my DX9.0c updated in Vista x64.

I was using 'AVG' but then thought id try 'Windows Live OneCare', cant notice any difference in performance on my system from the two of them.

Try having a look in task manager and see how much cpu usage its taking, maybe going to dual core would help down the road, anyway run CCleaner,do a defrag, disable real time scan on Windows Defender, try a newer driver then 7.3 since that is an early one for Vista, something like 7.8.7.9 would be good choice (I know you tried 7.10).

Thanks for all the help guys :)

Well from talking to a few friends it seems that they have very similar problems untill they upgraded to dual core cpu's.

Im getting a steady 20-30fps in WoW now.... TF2 and CSS are a lil more stable, not as static as it was...

Guess i'll just have to be patient with it untill i do my big upgrade once the next gen gpu's hit the market.

Once again, thanks all :)

Just get hold of a 64bit disc and reinstall with that using the key that came with your 32bit vista. Worked for me fine (Ive got 2 PCs, intalled one with 32bit Vista and the other 64bit but decided to make them both 64bit)

I actually think that the 64bit Vista is a bit quicker - certainly snappier in normal windows functions. But I do think that XP gives better FPS in games - I dont know if its due to the ATI drivers or the fact that Vista is more resource hungry.

Either way... Im not too bothered as I have a dual boot system.
