Chuck in a ubuntu cd, copy the user files off

Reinstall Windows. You'll save yourself the heart ache and the computer will run faster than when it did from new (no crapware).

It'll be quicker, less hassle and easier!

This is what willl probably happen.

I just needed to get Windows back into a usable state so the owner can back up their own stuff, once that it done I'll try fresh install.

Finally, thanks everyone for your help, that bluescreen viewer app is pretty handy.

Just ask them which folders they want and how they access email (may need to back up outlook stuff) then blitz it. Could take an image first. Just to be sure.
