I have no idea what vista is doing in the background, but whenever I play a game such as battlefield 2142 or CoH, the hard drive goes nuts doing something in the back ground.

I could understand if it was loading a map or something but it isn't and I know this because it doesn't happen regularly but randomly. It causes lag on even the smaller 24 man servers aswell.

my harddrive light on the case is constantly lit and flashing whenever I get any lag.

Anyone know how to stop this? I checked windows indexing and it said complete, I found out that it had started a defrag however whilst playing, so I stopped that but it still does it.

Anyone know what's going on?

i have a similar problem. Just recently installed vista 64, and since install there is hardly ever a time when my hard drive light isn't on. Starting to make me think my hd is busted.

Its probally superfetch and indexing thats causing the problem.
Both can be turned off.
Indexing is a real pain to be honest and if you dont do much searching on your drive its not needed.

How much memory you got too?, i heard the bf gets close to the 2mb limit if not over so it could be caching like crazy.

Indexing, superfetch, scheduled defrag and windows defender scan are main causes for excessive hd activity.

I set indexing to only index start menu and my docs, left superfetch on and turned off scheduled defrag and windows defender scan and my hd activity has dropped drasticly.

Mine clicks.

I too am 50-50 on whether its the HD or not?

The thing is, that I might be trying to watch a movie or even play an MP3, and it pauses... Only for half a second or maybe a whoel second, but its enough to ruin my enjoyment.

There is nothing in particular that causes it because it also happens when I click on somehting and instead of if coming up quickly, the HD clicks to life ( Even when its in the middle of somethign ) and it pauses and grinds and then shows the app or window or whatever???

I threw XP64 back on ( Should have kept it there ) and ocne again, had absolutely no issues in 2 days non-stop use, so I put Vista64 back on, and here we go again, lcick click every so often.

The HD is perfectly fine, its just Vista thats the problem.

This is with a Raptor 36/8

I might try it with a different drive soon actually, just in case, but before I got Vista64 I had Vista32 and played with that for a few days before chucking it in the drawer ( Its still there ) and the thing never clicked then?
