My g/f's lappy has vista on it, i installed xp beside it in a dual boot config.

I decided to remove xp so i formatted the D: which xp was installed on, rebooted with vista disk in drive, went into repair and run the dos window, i ran

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

then

bootrec.exe /fixboot

now when i start up i get a blank screen, i go back into the vista disk repair and it does not show any installation. WHat has happened here i thought this was how i could remove Xp safely :D

do i need to install a boot file now ? i tried the start up repair from the vista disk but no joy.

My girlfriend is not amused :(

I had similar prob in the past. In my case the vista boot file was installed to a different drive to the vista instalation, you may have unknowingly wiped this in the format. If you put the vista instalation disk (if you have one) in the cd drive it may boot up and work as a temporary fix.

yes i think the boot file must have been on a different drive. I tried many things but could not fix it, i reinstalled xp onto another drive to see if i could fix it from there however for some reason the partition that vista was on was showing as unformatted so in the end i lost the vista installation, i had to restore the laptop to 'from the shop' state. Lucky i had set the documents folder on another drive so the pictures and stuff my girlfriend had were safe.

i really dont know why the partition became unformatted but i look like a fool for messing about being smart and mucked it up.
