Hey guys,
I noticed yesterday that my VLC icon now has a santa hat on it!

Nice little touch from the devs there.

On another note, Is there any chance of a app which adds windows 7 integrated features to VLC like taskbar icon playback controls and stuff?

It's been doing that the last few years as far as I remember.

Rise of the Triad used to do something similar if you played it on Christmas day - christmas music and santa hats on the characters

Probably a file stored within VLC somewhere and when VLC runs it can detect the date from the system clock and there's probably a command to show that icon between two dates in December.

Easter egg.

VLC displays the santa hat between a set date.

The interface contains an easter egg which changes the VLC traffic cone logo so that it's wearing a Santa hat. The logo changes on December 18, one week before Christmas, and reverts to its normal appearance on January 1.

Yes, for some reason i did find myself reading the VLC wikipedia page a few weeks back.
