I have signed up to sipgate and they have given me a telephone number, I want to make this into a physical telephone rather than using their software.

I want to plug the phone into a router and be able to make/recieve calls.

I believe linksys do a device which turns a normal phone into a router, is this any good or am I better with an actual IP phone?

Always found you're better off with a real IP phone myself as you can generally get a lot more features out of the line that way.

I use a Thomson 780WL with a bog standard telephone plugged into it. I am with www.internetcalls.com and have been for several years- excellent results. Rings in the normal way Have a normal Leicester number which rings where ever I am in the World and plugged into the net. One can wire the house if one is so inclined the puter of course is not needed.
It is important that a setup is used so the the "Router" gives priority to the telephone calls over anything else the connection may be doing such as downloading a torrent that is maxing out the connection. A Router is therefor the best way to go!

The Thomson 716 is much the same and available for peanuts

A good place for voip info is the OZ site

I can recommend the Siemens C475 IP. I use this with our voiptalk sub. It's an EXCELLENT phone and I like how you can administer all its settings through a web interface too :D

Got a few Cisco 7940's at home with the SIP firmware on them, loads more features that I'd probably ever need but I got them so I can have a play around with Cisco CME etc. at a later date.
