Volkswagen cheats emissions tests!

It does the entire test using the batteries! The CO2 and MPG figures are extrapolated using the formulas designed to grade EVs. The V8 never fires up during the whole EU test!

What it will do is run the engine at the end at optimum efficiency to charge the battery to pretest level.

One thought that does occur. The potential $18Bn fine is surely just for their cars in the US.
Chances are that the "device" in question operates in other countries aswell.
If that's true, doesn't that mean that VW has been defrauding the UK chancellor, as that might directly impact upon the CO2 levels produced and thus the taxation that should be applied to UK sold cars?

Yea.....

The ECU detects when its doing a test. It then adjusts the cars performance to reduce the Co2 on said test.

Reduce NOx I think, not CO2, it's the NOx limits that are really tight in California

...as such this would be irrelevant, as they're not manipulating the CO2 performance (or at least, any more so than everyone does by playing to the cycles in the first place)

Have they come 'clean' about it quick time? Better than the usual big company spiel of denying until they turn blue, then admit liability.

Seems a bit of an odd one to me - given how the evidence was essentially out there I can't see how someone sat down and intentionally decided to go with that plan of action and not expect it to um backfire.

Not directly, agreed. For all that, maybe if they actually met the emissions regs, it might require a different fueling, and that could potentially impact upon CO2 rating.

Time to pick up some cheap VW shares?

Well depends on if they are about to just burn through $18bn+ in cash.

Also what will the German government find. They sell many more diesel vehicles in Europe than the USA.

Reputational damage is going to be huge. Will people in the US buy VW cars after this?

Like anything in the stock market.. Its a gamble... They may bounce back stronger.. and you've made a boat load of money.. OR !!!!! they may never recover and your investment keeps dropping like a lead balloon.

If only we had crystal balls eh ! we'd all be millionaires.
