Hullo everyone,

I am having some trouble setting up L2TP/IPsec VPN using a Draytek Vigor 2820Vn router.

I have followed the user manual to create the appropriate set up but at the bottom of the page, it states I need to configure NAT correctly to allow clients to connect.

I have looked up the ports needed and forwarded them to the routers IP. I know I also need to forward certain protocols.

I may be being a bit dense here but I see no option to forward protocols to the router?

Don't forward the ports.

In the VPN menu you can set what sort of connections the router is to listen for and it will just accept them.

I'm fairly sure trying to forward the ports manually will break it things.

^ That is assuming you're using the DrayTek as your vpn server.

You want to try and find a menu called remote access control setup. I'd just start getting a quick PPTP VPN set up to prove things are all ok, then get IPSec up and running.

Hi wij,

I have selected IPsec and L2TP from the Remote Access menu but on the client side, the error message indicates the router is not accepting VPN connections. I have tried with a PPTP connection to start with but the same error message pops up.

Odd, take it you rebooted the router after enabling the vpn dial in options (think they force you to anyway but can't remember).

:o

Feeling slightly red faced at the moment. The encryption protocols were different on the client machine to what the draytek accepts and thus kept rejecting the connection attempt.

Would have been handy if the error message highlighted this but its sorted now. PPTP connections work, now just need to get L2TP/IPsec to work.
