every now and again my pc will pause, screen goes black for a few seconds, the gfx card fan spins up momentarily then it all comes back on normal but some images are screwed up in Xfire(the gamechat thing) and firefox for example and says a VPU recover has just happened.
runs games fine though so i cant understand it, is it just a weird glitch with the drivers?

VPU recover is actually pretty handy. It reboots the graphics card whenever there's something wrong with it, so the whole system doesn't have to crash. It shouldn't happen too often though - maybe your card is overheating in certain games?

nope, ive said it works fine in games. this only happens when using 2d stuff it seems on the desktop. right clicking something where it makes a box thing appear, ie when you right click on the desktop or on msn messenger etc etc. when the box is filtering into view it will pause and do the vpu recover thing.
games are fine though. but these cards 'downclock' themselves when in 2d mode so i think its something to do with that myself OR the memory controller thing as its programmable on these too. ive read about problems like this with windows MCE but not XP

Ive never ever had a VPU recover, so if its what ATi drivers do, then mine must be buggered. :D
I've only ever had it happen on my GTO² the one time I overclocked it way too far (something silly like 570/690) so I think I'm in the same boat as you.

I'm glad my ATi drivers don't work properly then. :D
