Asking on behalf of a friend.
He's looking for a gaming laptop that is VR capable (already has HTC Vive) with an upper limit of ~£1500.

Any suggestions/spec's that he can look for?

Either of these:

Acer Triton 500

  • Intel Core Quad Core I5 8300H
  • Nvidia RTX 2060 6GB GDDR6
  • 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD
  • 8GB DDR4
  • 144Hz / 3ms / IPS/ G-Sync
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 1yr Warranty 3 year Warranty

£1,499.99

Or:

Asus ROG GL703GS

  • 17.3" G-Sync 120Hz
  • 3ms Response
  • Intel Core I7 8750H
  • Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5
  • 256GB SSD
  • 1TB (SATA) HDD
  • 16GB DDR4
  • Windows 10 (64bit)
  • 2yr Warranty

£1,399.99

Personally I'd take the 15" Acer from these two, yeah it "only" has a quad core I5 but the RTX 2060 will improve with new driver releases and new games. 144Hz IPS display vs 120Hz TN display. IPS wins. Warranty is a shame it's only 1 year. Special offer; comes with a 3 year warranty.

Oh, and the Acer looks sweet too.

My friend got an Asus laptop in the end but I forget which model at the moment. I can try and find out and post back (it was something that is available here but he ended up getting it cheaper elsewhere at the time).

Yea it would be good to know which one he has and how well it's works. Thanks

I picked up a GL703GS with a i7-8750H (6C/12T), 1070 and a 144Hz 17.3" 3ms Gsync panel for £1499 during the Black Friday sales. No problems with the Rift, so should work with all VR setups. I also added an additional stick of memory (~£100) as it came with just 1 16GB SODIMM. This gets the memory running in dual channel which adds a nice bump in performance.

Be aware though that all of these laptops get hot during gaming / VR, so you will need to tweak some settings.

Thanks, that's good to know it works well with that spec and that ram upgrade is certainly something I would do if the one I choose to get only has 1 stick.
